Introduction

The perception of the world is one of the most subjective themes. It depends on environment where you're living, your family and friends, books that you're reading, program that you have in school. And that's only about people from one country. When we talk about people from different countries the difference is even more global.

The perception of the world is something that affects films, paintings and, most importantly, books. As we all know books are the best way to reflect the knowledge and the culture. Through the books we get to know each other better. Obviously, English literature is different from Russian. Let's examine it by example of percepting seasons.

Chapter 1. Winter

Winter usually associates with:

  • old age and death

  • anger, resentment, discontent, or hatred

  • worry and anxiety

"A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens is a dark story about an old miser who is visited by the ghosts. Here is excerpt from a book:

"Foggier yet, and colder. Piercing, searching, biting cold. If the good Saint Dunstan had but nipped the Evil Spirit’s nose with a touch of such weather as that, instead of using his familiar weapons, then indeed he would have roared to lusty purpose."

Chapter 2. Spring

Spring is a beginning cycle of life. It is associated with:

  • youth & childhood

  • a fresh start, a new beginning

  • love

"The April Witch" by Ray Bradbury is a story about a young witch who just turned seventeen and wants to fall in love. T his is how the story begins:

"Into the air, over the valleys, under the stars, above a river, a pond, a road, flew Cecy. Invisible as new spring winds, fresh as the breath of clover rising from twilight fields, she flew. She soared in doves as soft as white ermine, stopped in trees and lived in blossoms, showering away in petals when the breeze blew. ... She lived in new April grasses, in sweet clear liquids rising from the musky earth."

Chapter 3. Summer

Summer is all about life in full swing. It associates with:

  • young adulthood

  • energy & vitality

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain starts with summer. It is a story about resourceful children and their wonderful journeys. Here is excerpt from a book:

"SATURDAY morning was come, and all the summer world was bright and fresh, and brimming with life. There was a song in every heart; and if the heart was young the music issued at the lips. There was cheer in every face and a spring in every step. The locust-trees were in bloom and the fragrance of the blossoms filled the air."

Chapter 4. Autumn

Autumn is associated with:

  • middle age

  • harvest

  • abundance and prosperity

  • c elebratory festivals

"Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury is a story about two great friends, mysterious carnival troupe enticing people and a man who wants to be a good father but thinks he's too old to even live a good life. This is how the author describes on of the season's months:

"And if it's around October twentieth and everything smoky-smelling and the sky orange and ash grey at twilight, it seems Hallowe'en will never come in a fall of broomsticks and a soft flap of bedsheets around corners."

In conclusion

In conclusion, I'd want to say that symbolism helps us to understand the history of the different countries, their perception of life and all the other aspects. This is one of the most helpful things for learning a language. Because if we understand what the words are associated with we can express what we want to say better.
