What impressed British people in Russia?
John. I'm impressed by Russian students. They are unique. How cultured and knowledgeable Russian students are. Lots of them can quote Pushkin by heart. Everyone is so proud of him and he seems to be a national hero as well as a poet. Russians have a real appreciation of the arts: they love theatre, ballet, opera, and concerts too.
Jane. Lots of things impressed me in Russia. People dress so smartly in public even if they don't own many clothes. There are lots of fur coats and hats in winter, but women often wear miniskirts even when temperatures are well below zero. In general people dress more formally than Americans.
Charles. I was so impressed by Russia when I first arrived. The city seemed so beautiful. But I faced a challenge with the food. There is too much pork, and too many mushrooms and eggs. And it's too heavy and oily for my taste ... Why do they fry everything?
Ann. Russian host families are unique. My host mother is so warm and caring, and she never lets me do anything to help around the house. And when I try to wash the dishes she says, "Have a rest!" Misha, my Russian "brother" is just 14. He is really bright and lively but he doesn't like doing his homework much. I was very happy the first time he asked me to help him; to my surprise, he always wants me to do his English for him. I think he wants to improve his English.
Brian. I'm the British Council manager in Nizhny Novgorod.
I've been living in Russia for three and a half years now. Two years ago I was invited to a "dacha". Everyone's heard of a "dacha", but up till then I'd never been to one: And it was such a wonderful experience. It was in the countryside, outside Moscow. It was a typical Russian wooden house with a really nice garden and we spent the day enjoying ourselves talking, joking, eating shashlik, then we went for a swim. We had a really good time, we enjoyed it.
Brian. In Russia I was impressed by cross-country skiing and by the banya. I'll start with skiing. Skiing is not something that we do very much in England. It is a problem because we don't have much snow and it's just not part of our tradition, but in Russia there's a lot of snow and it's definitely part of their tradition. And
I was invited to go skiing by some Russian friends more or less as soon as I arrived. And it was wonderful,
I mean, I found out how to get up after falling over, then I managed to stay upright and managed to move.
I really enjoyed skiing.
Brian: And the banya ... That was a very surprising experience. The first time I went to a Russian banya, I was frustrated. Sitting in a really hot steamy room, sweating and talking, I found it rather strange. When someone came in with birch branches and started beating everybody. I found it absolutely incredible.
I was told it was good for my health and
I believed it and I just have to say that was an unforgettable experience
