1. Приветствие.

Look at the statement, it is about London.

“ When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.”

Dr. Samuel Johnson

Do you agree with him or not? Why?

Yes, it’s really so because there are so many places to go and today we are going to speak about London’s museums and galleries. What museums and galleries in London do you know?

  • The British Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Museum of London...

Yes, you are quite right, but in the city there are many other museums and today we’ll speak about them.

Before doing it let’s remember words and expressions about art and museums.

Translate from English into Russian and from Russian into English.

2. I think, it’s quite time to get acquainted with the museums and galleries of London. While speaking you must fill in the table using the information about the date of foundation, the main exhibits. At the end of the lesson it will be a contest. The winner will get a gift. Clear? Let’s start.

London consists of different districts. Let’s have a look at Bloomsbury. Here we can find the British Museum.

  • It was founded in 1753 on the collection of Sir Hans Sloane. The money to house them was raised by a public lottery. Now it has two departments: the Museum of Mankind and the National History Museum. The Museum of Mankind includes a vast collection of antiquities, marbles from the Parthenon, the Rosetta Stone that provides the key to Egyptian hieroglyphics, ancient works of art in stone, bronze and gold, the collection illustrating Western Asiatic civilizations. The Natural History Museum contains 5 principal collections on the history of plants, minerals, the animal kingdom. New permanent exhibitions have been opened in the museum.

In every museum there are different signs with rules how to behave you. I’ ll give you a minute, remember them and write the signs ( refreshments; museum shop; put empty cans here; restrooms; no food or beverages allowed on the exhibition floor; information; thank you for recycling your cans in the blue recycling containers; no smoking; facility for the disabled; checkroom; telephone; escalator)

3. In Westminster we can find the Tate Gallery which contains the unique collection of British painting from the 16th centuries till present days. Let’s listen to the girls.

- Hello, it’s a programme “ National View”. We’ll speak about the Tate Gallery” today.

- When and by whom was the Gallery founded?

- It was founded by a sugar manufacturer Henry Tate in 1897 as a private collection. Later it was presented as a gift to the country. Now there are more than 300 oil and 19000 water colours and drawings.

- When were they painted?

- There are a lot of paintings of the 16th century by English painters. Also, you can see many paintings by foreign artists of the 19th century.

  • Whose paintings are exhibited here?

  • Here you can see works of William Turner, Pablo Picasso, Henry Moor, Joshua Reynolds, William Hogarth, paintings by impressionists, post-impressionists and others. Our guide will speak about them.

- Our Gallery exhibits many outstanding works of famous English and foreign artists. Here you can see the sculptures of Henry Moor, whose collection is rather big. Besides, you can see the works of a famous English painter William Turner. His pictures are connected with sea. One hall of the Gallery is devoted to the masterpieces of Sir Joshua Reynolds. He was one of the outstanding British portraitists. The most famous of his paintings are: “ Self – portrait “,“ The Portrait of Nelly O’Brien”, “ The Portrait of Samuel Johnson” and others. In the William Hogarth’s hall there are many group portraits. For example: “ The Graham Children”, “ The Marriage – a – la- Mode” and others. The paintings of this Gallery empress everybody who visits it.

  • The Tate Gallery ranks with such famous sights of London as Westminster Abbey, The Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square. It is situated in Millbank and opened from 10 a.m. till 18 p.m. every day except Sunday.

Thank you very much, girls. Now my question to the students: Who are the famous artists whose pictures we can see in the Gallery?

4. The next museum that we’ll go is the Museum of Madame Tussaud’s, which is situated in Marylebone. Who knows what kind of museum is it?

  • It’s a wax museum.

  • Yes, you are quite right but let’s listen to the information

about this museum.

  • Situated near the Baker Street tube station, this attraction is one of the most popular that London has to offer. Madame Tussaud first arrived at the capital in 1802 bearing the sculptured heads of executed French aristocrats and ever since “her” wax models have been pulling in the crowds. The exhibition is split into several sections in which visitors can see replicas of the famous and the infamous from both past and present. Models include politicians like Margaret Thatcher, Roosevelt, pop stars like the Beatles, and royalty like Prince Charles and Lady Di, Elvis Priestly, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, Bill Clinton and others.

There is usually a long queue in front of the museum. Many tourists would consider their trip to London worthless if they didn’t visit the famous museum. There are several halls in the museum. Highlights include the Grand Hall, the Chamber of Horrors and “ The Spirit of London” exhibition.

-The wax figures are standing and sitting, and sometimes even moving and talking. They are extremely realistic and when they look at you, their eyes sparkling, you often feel uncomfortable in their company. Computer controlled figures are especially popular with the visitors.

New models are being produced all the time while the old ones are quietly removed from display.

Here you can see the figures of two famous women. We are sure that you know who they are. Yes, you are quite right, they are Victoria Beckham and Marilyn Monroe. You can come to them, ask different questions and ask for a sign. These models can move and speak.

Welcome to our museum every day except Sunday.

The tickets:

Grown-ups- 15 pounds

Children from 5 till 15- 10 pounds

Little children- free

  • Now a question to the students: The figures of what Russian famous people can we see in the Museum?

5. The Museum of Design, I am sure that not all of you know about this museum. It is situated in Docklands and contains a collection of 20th century mass-produced consumer objects. Let’s listen to the girls who are ready with this information.

-5-

  • Hello, friends, we are going to tell you about one of the most interesting museums of London. It’s the first museum in the world to examine the role of design in our everyday life. Changing displays include furniture, cars,

graphics and ceramics. It contains a great variety of exhibits including the prototype of the 1992 Olympic gold medal winning bicycle.

  • In the Museum you can see the works of famous English designers. One of such people is Terence Conran. He introduced the idea of a good design style in homes with the Habitat Stores in the 1960s. In our museum you can have a look at the tables, chairs, carpets, curtains, cups, pots and pans which are made in bright colors and fresh design. It looks modern but friendly at the same time. And it is also quite cheap.

Have a look at these pictures and photos of rooms and houses. How do you like their interior and design decision? The design of what room do you like best of all?

What do you think about the furniture in this bedroom?

The design of what room would you like to use in your house?

6. The Museum of Toy and Model was founded in the 50s of the 19th century. We can say that it is a museum of childhood. All children like toys and not only children but also grown-ups are not against to have a look and to play toys.

- Yes, really, the museum tells the history of childhood through things made for children. It contains the largest display of toy dolls, doll’s houses, and the children’s clothes, which go back to the 18th century. Outstanding among these clothes are two outfits of silk and a girl’s dress of Chinese silk, but the star exhibit is a complete wardrobe, worn by a child named Henrietta Byron in 1840.

  • In this museum we can see favourite toys of famous English people. Lady Diana liked bears very much and here we can find a great collection of them. Look at our exhibition of toys. Do you like it? Of course, they are very nice

and everybody in the museum can buy any toy in a special gift shop that there is in the museum.

7. Dear guests, I’d like to invite you not to the shop but to the Auction where you can buy a toy. Do you know what is an auction? It’s a place where people go in order to buy something for their collections. Every thing is a” lot “ that has a starting price. People offer their own prices raising their hands. Every step will cost ... Let’s start. We have a hammer, it’s a unique one because it’s a sound hammer. (we offer to buy 3 things )

8. Now let’s read a text about the Transport Museum.

The Museum of British Transport is in London. It tells the story of public transport in Britain. In 1829, an Irishman started the first bus service in London. It was drawn by three horses and looked like a carriage. The first double-decker bus was built in 1851. In 1885, the first buses, driven by a petrol engine were used in London. The first passenger railway in England was the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. In 1829, the company offered a prize of 500 pounds for the best steam train. The prize was won by George Stephenson, with his famous train “ the Rocket “. In 1938 a train (“Mallard”) was built. It travelled at 126 miles per hour, and that was world record speed for a steam train. Nowadays this train can be seen in the Museum of Transport.

9. Different people visit different museums and galleries. Listen to the dialogue and answer the questions.

Look at the words: art movement, cubist, dove, genius, perspectiveless, Van Gogh, Gauguin, shade.

Is it a museum or an art gallery?

10. Look at the blackboard! There you can see the names of some other museums and galleries: the Imperial War Museum, the Museum of London, the National Maritime Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Science Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, the Theatre Museum.

Let’s write down the information about them in our table:

The Imperial War Museum – 1917 – in Lamberth – a military museum, exhibits that illustrate all aspects of 2 world wars and other military operations of Britain since 1914.

The Museum of London – 1976 – in the City – a museum of history of London from prehistoric times to the present days.

The National Maritime Museum – in Greenwich – with models and pictures of British ships, the things connected with the sea, sailing and famous seamen.

The Victoria and Albert Museum – 1857- contains a collection of fine and applied arts, a collection of miniatures, watercolors, sculptures. It was named after Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert.

The Science Museum – 1851- housing collections that illustrate the history and development of science, engineering and industry with many working models.

The Theatre Museum – a major centre for students of the performing arts.

11. Dear friends, we have spoken about different museums, galleries, artists. Let’s remember the most famous painters of Great Britain, who are they?

- William Hogarth, Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, Joseph Mallord William Turner and others.

- Yes, you are quite right and I hope that you remember how we must describe a picture according to the plan. We did it during the lessons. What must we include into the description?

- 1. The general effect (the title and the name of the artist; the period or trend represented; how it appears: natural and spontaneous or contrived and artificial? )

- 2. The contents of the picture ( place, time, setting, the accessories, the dress and environment, emotions of the model.)

- 3. The composition and colouring ( How is the sitter represented? Against what background? Do the hands (head, body) look natural and informal? How do the eyes gaze? Does the painter concentrate on the analysis of details?)

- 4. Interpretation and evaluation (does it exemplify a high degree of artistic skill? What feelings or ideas does it evoke in the viewer?)

  • Look at the picture and describe it but before doing it let’s make up two teams. I’d like to see what team will be the winner.

12. Now let’s remember the information about the museums and galleries of London. Look at the blackboard, you can see there that every museum has a number. I’ll read the facts and you must write down only numbers. It’s a kind of

a contest and the winner will get a present.

1.The British Museum 5. The Museum of Toy and

2. The Tate Gallery Model.

3. The M. Tussau’d 6. The Imperial War Museum.

My best congratulations to the winners. Get your presents.

Dear friends, today we’ve spoken about different interesting places in London and I hope that you will remember about it for a long time because as Pablo Picasso said:

“We all know that Art is not Truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand”.

13. Now let’s speak about our lesson: What was interesting for you? What didn’t you like? What have you been taught?

14. Go to the museums, galleries and exhibitions, admire the masterpieces of art, they will help you to realize how wonderful is our life and everything around. I am so grateful to you for the work during the lesson and everything that you have prepared.

The lesson is over. Thank you. Good bye.
