I phase - Motivation
Good morning! Glad to see you! Today we are going to write, read and speak about one of the strongest and greatest human feelings. What human feelings do you know?
Work at dictionaries
(Work on presentation № 1)
These pictures will help you to write the associations to the word “Love”. Now try to group these words and give a name to each group. Choose a speaker to present your cluster.
Work in 2 groups: each group should write and present:
a. The word “Love” associates with ….
b. The words … are grouped into the category “…”.
c. So, the word “Love” associates with (categories)
Checking up the home task
Love is connected with many holidays. Look and choose the right statement to this picture. What’s the theme of our lesson? Our lesson is devoted to St. Valentine’s Day, one of the most favorite holidays all over the world.
Work with the whole class.
Developing listening skills
Many songs and poems are written about the beauty of love. Listen to the extracts of Shakespeare’s, Abai’s and Pushkin’s poems.
Task: Fill in the table and put down the words describing love from these poems.
Pupils recite the extracts of the poems by Shakespeare, Abai and Pushkin (the task is given before).
Class does the note-taking.
Match the famous couples.
Love joins hearts of different people. Try to remember and match the famous couples.

Developing reading and speaking skills
Work on the table:
a. Fill in the 1st part of the table.
History knows people who join hearts together. Who were they? They were priests. Look at the picture and put a mark.
Show me you cards. Nick, why did you put “a Plus mark”?
We know such a priest as St. Valentine. Let’s read one legend about him.
+ Put “A Plus mark” if they have good emotions towards this picture.
- Put “A Minus mark” if you they have negative emotions towards this picture.
? Put “A question mark” if they doubt why this picture is here.
Work at the text
b. Read and understand the 1st part of the legend.
Task after reading: Choose a pencil and colour the 1st square about the 1st part of the text and a holly man. What colour did you choose and why? You may read out sentences from the text to prove it.
Pupils read the text individually.
Discuss the following questions in groups.
c. Read and understand the 2nd part.
Task after reading: Write out the main 2-3 word combinations or phrases from the 2nd part of the text into the 2nd square of the table. Compare your choice with your partner.
Work in pairs I think Valentine gave love and happiness to each man in the village. Holy men gave happiness only to themselves.
d. Read and understand the 3rd part of the legend.
Task after reading: Divide the 3rd square into 2 parts and fill in the table. What’s your opinion? Who made greater deeds? Why do you think so? Discussion
Work in changing pairs
e. Read and understand the 4th part.
Task after reading: Answer the question in the 4th square of the table: “Did people remember Valentine or other holy men after their death?” Prove it.
Discuss the following questions in pairs.
f. Let’s work with a table again. Put a mark to the 2nd part of the table. Why did you change your opinion now? Say some words.
St. Valentine's Day, 14 February, has been celebrated in Europe and British Isles since the 13th century, in the USA - since 1777, and in Russia and Kazakhstan -since 1990.
- Put “A Minus mark” if you they have negative emotions towards St. Valentine.

Get to know your fortune.
This is one of the ways how the English girls get to know their fortunes on St. Valentine's Eve. They take an apple and divide it into four parts, count the seeds from the apple and find the fortune in the poem.
