There once lived a middle aged man and his wife.
One day the man says to his wife:
- You, wife, bake pies, and I will harness sleigh and go fishing.
The man went to the river, fished the full cartload.
He is going home and sees: a fox is lying on the road.
She has rolled up and doesn't stir, as she is dead.
- Very nice, - thought the old man.
Here is a glorious find. It will be a collar to my grandmother for her fur coat.
The old man took the fox and put her on the cartload and went ahead.
The old man goes ahead and doesn't look back. But the fox found the time and began to throw away fish by fish, fish by fish and ran away stealthily.
The old man came home and called his wife:
- Well, wife, come and see what a notable collar I have brought you for your fur coat!
The wife came to the cartload: there was neither collar, nor fish in the sleigh. And she began to scold the old man.
- Oh, you're so-and-so! You are not a shamed to deceive me!
Here the old man realized that the fox was alive, not dead.
He grieved, grieved, but what he should do then!
And the fox, meanwhile, gathered all the fish on the road in a heap.
She is sitting and eating. The wolf comes to her.
- Hello, godmother, good appetite... Give me some fish!
- Fish yourself and eat!
- I can't fish!
- I have already fished! You, godfather, go to the river, put your tail in an ice-hole, sit and say:
" Catch, fish, big and small! Catch, fish, big and small!"
So, the fish will grasp to your tail itself. The more you will sit, the more you will fish.
The wolf went to the river, put his tail in the ice-hole.
He is sitting and sentencing:
" Catch, fish, big and small! Catch, fish, big and small!"
And the fox is walking around the wolf and sentencing:
- Freeze, freeze, wolf's tail!
- What are you saying, godmother?
- I am helping you to fish!
And again:
- Freeze, freeze, wolf's tail!
Freeze, freeze, wolf's tail!
The wolf was sitting near the ice-hole all night long. His tail has frozen down.
In the morning he wanted to stand up - but it was impossible.
He thought: "How much fish I have caught! I can't even pull out!"
At this time a middle-aged woman is going to the ice-hole with the buckets. She saw the wolf and cried out:
- Wolf, wolf! Beat him!
Wolf was trying here and there, but he couldn't pull out his tail. The middle-aged woman threw buckets and began to beat him with the yoke. Beat, beat. The wolf tore, tore his tail off and took his heels.
"All right," he thinks. "I'll pay you back, godmother!"
The fox penetrated into the peasant's log hut where the peasant's wife
lived, ate dough that the peasant's wife had prepared to bake bread.
Then she smeared her head with dough, ran to the road and fell down.
She is lying and moaning.
The wolf is running.
He saw the fox and said:
- So, that is how you have taught me, godmother, to fish! Look! I was beaten up... I have lost my tail.
The fox tells him:
- Oh, godfather! You don't have a tail but you still have your head. And mine is broken. Look at me - my brain is leaking. I'll barely drag along.
- It is true, - says the wolf. How you can go, godmother! Sit on me, I will carry you.
The fox sat on wolf's back. He carried her.
Here the fox is sitting on the wolf's back and singing quietly:
