What is a computer? Computer is a device for processing information. Computer has no intelligence by itself and is called hardware. Software are the programmes that tell the hardware how to perform a task.

Who created computer programmes? William Henry Gates, known as Bill Gates, is probably the richest man in America. He is the world’s most famous computer engineer. He designed a book on the computer language BASIC and created many computer programmes and operating systems for computer, such as DOS (disk operating system), Windows NT (New technology) developed by the company named Microsoft.

Today we live in the XXI-st century – century of new technologies. There are many new technologies today. One of them is computer. Nearly all in our world controlled by computers, because they are far more efficient that human beings. They can store much information.

Computers are used more and more often in the world today. Especially, young people spend their time in front of computers every day. They use it everywhere: at home, at school, in Internet clubs, etc. Computer can do many of the things we do, but faster and better. They can predict weather, and even play chess, write poetry or compose music.

Nowadays computer is one kind of Mass Media. People who don’t have TV or radio may use the computers which is in Internet clubs. Our life would be boring without computers. It’s hard to believe that one device can provide people with entertainment, news, education, music. With the appearance of computer many things have lost their importance. People don’t watch TV anymore, don’t go to the cinema very often. They don’t listen to the radio, CD- or MP3-player. They’ve stopped buying newspapers and magazines. Many have taken online classes. Thus, computers and Internet have become an integral part of every family.

Computer is a powerful tool. It helps to create colourful presentations, to calculate large numbers, to write articles, to save and edit photos, to keep documentation and of course, to surf the web. Internet is the main stream of information nowadays. It informs us entertainments and educational programmes. We find everyday news online, educational resources, films, music, games, shows. Everyone can find something to his or her own taste there.

Computers are one of great importance in modern hospital, on factories, in security, at the banks, in modern schools and so on.

However, computers have certain disadvantages. First of all, there is too much violence online, as well as aggressive pictures and irrelevant information. All this can lead to different problems. Secondly, Internet is a free space, where personal information can easily be stolen. So, people should be aware of what they are posting or downloading. Thirdly, computers have turned people into passive creatures. They can spend hours in front of the monitors, which results into poor eyesight and other health issues. In conclusion, I’d like to add that computers are good at certain extent. If they are being used wisely and moderately, then they can make our life better.

There are many advantages and disadvantages in using computers. We can watch news of the world, entertainment and educational programmes, print our necessary papers, copy the pictures and photos, learn foreign languages, read the adverts, etc. We can use them in computer with the help of Internet. It is very useful for everybody.

But the youth may become rude and lazy. Because they stop reading books, newspapers, magazines and don’t do their homework. They become rude to their parents when they ask their children sleep early and not to sit up in front of the computer for a long time. Because computer is bad for their eyesight and they become a computer addict.

To my mind, everyone should use computer today because we are the people of new century. We should know how to use the computer. And everyone shouldn’t sit up late in front of the computer not to harm for their eyes and not to use sunglasses.
