England
England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. The Irish Sea lies north west of England, whilst the Celtic Sea lies to the southwest. The North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south separate England from continental Europe.
London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. It is the most populous city in the United Kingdom, with a metropolitan area of over 13 million inhabitants. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium.
When somebody says London, what famous things first come to your mind?
Big Ben
The clock is universally known as Big Ben. It was named after Sir Benjamin Hall (the first Commissioner of Works). The 320-foot clock tower carries one of the best-known clock faces in world.
Hyde Park
Hyde Park is one of the largest parks in central London, England and one of the Royal Parks of London, famous for its Speaker’s Corner.
Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace is the official London residence and the principle workplace of the British monarch.
Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is a setting for state occasions and royal hospitality.
The Tower of London
The Tower of London is one of the most and popular of London’s historical sights. There are always at least 6 ravens at the Tower. There is a legend that they bring good luck to Britain if they stay at the Tower. The Beefeaters used to guard the Tower.
Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives its name.
In the 19th century, London Bridge was the only way of crossing the Thames river.
It has become an iconic symbol of London.
