The geographical position of Australia
Australia is an island- continent lying to south east of Asia, with nearby island of Tasmania and a number of smaller islands. it is the only country in the world, which occupies the territory of the whole continent. Australia covers an area of 7.7 mln sq. km, the same as the USA and is 30 times larger than Great Britain. The capital of Australia is Canberra but don't think that if Canberra is the capital it is the largest city , the largest city in Australia is Sydney. The population of Australia is about 18 mln. People cannot live where there is no water, and so most of people in Australia live in the richer south-east part ofAustralia.
The Australian continent is washed in the north by the Timor and Arafura Seas and Torres Strait, in the east by the Tasman and Coral Seas, in the south by Bass Strait and the Indian Ocean. Australia is the smallest continent and the largest island in the world.
Australia has the flattest landscape but there are also a lot of mountain chains there like the Great Dividing Range. Other mountains include the Kimbеrley and Hamerslay Ranges in Western Australia, the Mac-donnell and Musgrave Ranges in Central Australia, and the Flinders Range in South Australia.Mount Kosciusko (2230 m), in the Australian Alps, is Australia's highest point.
The bad fact is that there are few rivers and lakes in Australia. The most popular river in Australia is the Murray (2,600 km) and the longest river is the Darling (2,740 km).
The isolation of the continent and the geographical position have influenced on the animals. You can see some of them.
