Конспект урока по английскому языку

Green Issues

(повторение и обобщение по теме)

The aims:

  • further development of the students’ awareness about environmental and health issues and people’s actions,

  • development of communicative and language competence on the module materials and ideas,

  • revision and getting ready for the test.

Оборудование: компьютер, проектор, презентация MS Power Point “Green issues”, материалы интернета.



I . Greetings. T – Cl, T – P

II. The aim of the lesson.

T – CL: Today we are reviewing all the ideas and the language material of the Green issues and getting ready for the test.

III. Today’s ecological situation.

T – CL: What is the eco situation on our planet today? Let’s watch short animated films.

Impressive, aren’t they? All the ideas were in your homework exercise.Translation corner. Let’s check them.

(The ecological situation on the planet Earth is bad. Many species of birds and animals are in danger because of air, water and soil pollution. Acid rains poison water and soil. Many species of fish and plants are dying. We must do everything we can to reduce pollution of the environment. We should be friendly to Nature: plant flowers, collect rubbish for recycling, clean out ponds, rivers and lakes. We should try to preserve/keep the natural habitats for animals).

IV. Acid rain.

T – Cl: we read about the reasons and effects of acid rain. Look at the poster;

What causes acid rain?

P: Cars burn petro, factories and power stations burn coal and emit toxic fumes. So the air we breathe becomes polluted.

The pollution is gathered in clouds and with the oxygen and water in the atmosphere it becomes acid. The winds carry the polluted clouds across long distances, far away.

When it rains, this pollution lands on trees, houses buildings, cars, clothes, everywhere! This is called acid rain, but there is actually acid fog, snow and sleet.

T: Do you think the effects are serious? Why?

P: Yes, they are really very serious. When acid rain falls into lakes, streams, rivers and seas, they become toxic. This is water pollution and it harms, kills or wipes out fish and plant species. Acid rain flows into the soil and damages trees and plants, too. It causes serious damage to buildings and objects. Air pollution makes people breathe toxic fumes and cause health problems as well.

T: What can we do? Look and finish the ideas.

  • The governments can … (make laws against pollution)

  • The industries can … (use new technologies such as solar panels, wind turbines, etc.)

  • We can … (use fewer cars, solar and wind power, etc.)

  • I can ….

V. Revising grammar

  • T: The module gave us ideas about using a complicated grammar structure called Present Perfect Continuous.

Take a look at the structure and the meaning. When do we use and how do we form it?

P: We use it for actions that started in the past with the emphasis on duration.

P: We form it with have/has +been + V ing.

T: Now we are supposed to look at the screen, make the correct sentences and put down the verb forms in your exercise books.

  1. People have been polluting the atmosphere for 100 years.

  2. Toxic fumes have been poisoning our planet.

  3. Air pollution has been destroying the sculpture for 50 years.

  4. The tap has been leaking since morning.

  5. People have been thinking over green cities issues since they moved.

  6. The family have been using solar power panel to heat the house in winter.

  7. They have been using wind turbines.

  8. The eco helpers have been planting the trees all the morning.

  9. She has been collecting the rubbish to recycle for a week.

  10. Engineers have been designing the green car.

  11. I have been using green cleaning products for a month.



  • Have to / don’t have to

T: Very soon all of us will become eco helpers. Cleaning out campaigns or subbotnics are really important. Do you take part in them? What do you have to do or don’t have to do?

PP: We have to / don’t have to …(pick up litter, rake the old leaves, dig the soil, whitewash the trees, clean out the pond, burn the rubbish, plant flowers and trees, build besting boxes)

T: Do you have a dacha? Do you mind going there? Why? What do you have to do there? What tools do you use for it?

P: I dig the soil with a spade. …

VI. Animal world

T: Our planet has a unique animal world but many species are in danger today. There is an organization which takes great efforts to preserve them and its name is …

P: … WWF

T: … and its emblem is …

P: … a panda.

T: Now complete the dialogue. Get ready to act it out. You can change some ideas, too.

P – P (2 – 3 pairs present their variants)

T: What is your favourite animal? Who would you like to make a donation for? Why?

PP: … (My favourite animal is … And I’d like to make a donation for a … . It is beautiful/ funny/ in ganger/ dying out, etc.)



VII. The world's famous ecologist

T: Have a look at the photo. Does anyone know the person’s name? What is he famous for? If you don’t, let’s listen to the information and learn about the man.

Pupils listen to the audio text about Jacques Yves Cousteau and fill the gaps.



VIII. Crossword puzzle.

T: Let’s have some fun and solve a crossword puzzle. You have it on the desks and can use pens or pencils to fill in the words and learn the key idea.

Now we are checking it. What is the key word? (ECO-FRIENDLY)

Are you eco-friendly?

IX. Tag questions

T: The last grammar item we should revise today is tag questions. Look again at the crossword clues and turn them into tags. (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10)

X. Make a difference

T: I was lucky to find a very nice optimistic animation on the issues discussed in class. Let’s watch it and make our choice.

So how can we make a difference?

PP: I/my family, friends and neighbours can/should … (collect and recycle litter, plant trees and flowers, use less cars or share cars, use solar panels, switch off electric appliances, etc.)

T: We have a boy in the class who studies in art school and he had a special task to make an eco-poster on the green issues. Now we have a chance to see it. You are welcome.

P: This is how my dream looks like. It is about our world. I believe there is a great contrast between the life in the city and in the countryside. The city is grey and dull. The air is polluted and there is no life. We can’t see any birds, animals or plants, only concrete walls. But in the countryside everything is bright and alive: green p0lants, colourful flowers and butterflies. I have a dream that we take care of this wonderful world and protect it. Our world is our future.



XI. The end of the class

T: Thank you greatly for your participation and bright ideas and your marks are … .

I hope that now we have much better awareness of the green issues and their importance. And next time when your class teacher says “Tomorrow we are cleaning out the school yard “, no one of you will say “I can’t, I’m not quite well”. Or when your parents ask you to help them on the dacha you won’t think it is boring and there are better things for a teen to do.
