The aims

Introducing the theme
Children, look at the posters in our classroom, read their titles and try to guess the theme of our lesson today, please.
– You are right. You see the maps Wales and Northern Ireland
T.: So, today you will learn about the geographical situation of these countries, their capitals, population, official languages, some symbols and some interesting facts.
You are going to read the texts in groups to find the special information and then to fill in the gaps with the information in the tables.
Presentation
I need 2 teams, for this you should come to the desk and choose one of the flags. – There are 2 teams representing 3 English countries, they are Wales and Northern Ireland (each team has a map, a flag that they are from the country which they represent). Each team must present its country. They can tell all they want about their countries.
– For this task I’ll give you 8 minutes.
– If you are ready, let’s start checking your understanding.
1st group “Wales”:
Wales is the small country that borders central England in the West. Wales is located in central-west Great Britain. Its area, the size of Wales, is about 20,779 km². It has population less than 3 million.
The capital of Wales is Cardiff, the largest city in Wales and the 10th largest city in the United Kingdom. The city is Wales' chief commercial centre, which is populated by 300,000 people.
English and Welsh are the two languages of Wales. The Welsh language is one of the oldest in Europe, and is very different from English. All Welsh people can speak English, but about 20% of them can also speak Welsh.
The Welsh flag has a red dragon on the background that is half white and half green. The dragon has been a symbol of Wales for more than a thousand years.
The symbol of Wales are the daffodil and the leek. The daffodil is a yellow flower that appears in spring, and some Welsh people attach one to their coat on Welsh national day (St David’s Day), which is 1st March.
2nd group “Northern Ireland” Northern Ireland is the smallest of the 4 main parts that make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland occupies the northeast corner of the island of Ireland. It takes up about sixth of the island.
The area of the Northern Ireland is about 140144 square kilometres. The population of Northern Ireland is over 1.626.000 (one million six hundred twenty six thousand) million The official language of the Northern Ireland is English. English is the most spoken language in Northern Ireland Northern Ireland’s flag have a six- pointed star and a red hand..Northern Ireland’s flag and coat of arms ceased to be official symbols after Britain took direct control of the country s government in 1972.
The symbol of Northern Ireland is the shamrock , a three –leaved plant similar to clover. It is a symbol of trinity.
Belfast is a capital , largest city and chief industrial center and port of Northern Ireland. The population of Belfast is 343,871. For many years ship building and textile manufacturing provided most of the jobs in Belfast. Belfast shipyard have built many warships and ocean liners including the famous British liner Titanic.
