The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (The UK) is the official name of the state which is situated in the British Isles.
It consists of four countries which are England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. You can see them on the map. Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.
The UK is an island state. The two main islands are Great Britain and Ireland. The two islands are separated by the Irish Sea.
The UK is separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Straits of Dover. More than 56 million people live in Britain.

In Britain the Queen is the Head of State, but in fact she doesn’t rule the country as she has no power. The Queen is the symbol of the country, its history and its traditions. She is very rich. She travels about the United Kingdom, meet different people and visits schools, hospitals and other special places.

London
London is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom situated on the Thames river, the largest city in Britain and one of the largest cities in the world.
Places of Interest in Great Britain
Britain is rich in its historic places which link the present with the past. Westminster Abbey is a fine Gothic building, which stands opposite the Houses of Parliament. It contains an interesting collection of swords and standards of the Knights of the Bath. The Abbey is famous for its stained glass. The Abbey is sometimes compared with a mausoleum, because there are tombs and memorials of almost all English monarch, many statesmen, famous, scientists, writers and musicians.
Tower of London
The Tower of London is one of the most imposing and popular of London s historical sites. It includes 20 towers. The oldest is the White Tower, dates back to the 11thcentury and the time of William the Congueror. Nowadays a lot of tourists visit the Tower of London, because of the Towers evil reputation as prison.
St Paul , s Cathedral
One of the greatest English churches, St Paul’s Cathedral, is not far from the Tower of London. The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17thcentury after the Great Fire. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. In one of them there is one of the largest bells in the world.
