Цели урока:

Teacher: Good morning, students! Nice to see you all! What date is it today?
Student: Today is the 16 –th of October.
Teacher: The weather is great today, isn’t it?

Teacher: Oh, that’s true! It is quite warmer now than it was some years ago. Who can tell me what is the possible reason of such an extraordinary situation as global warming?

Teacher: Many scientists prove it. So you are right. Now I ask you to look at the screen and to watch the clip of Michael Jackson’s song. Your home task was to read, to translate and to realize the sense of this song. You are to try to pronounce all the words of this song properly while singing it and to express your ideas about what our today’s lesson will be devoted to. Teacher: Well, and you know that we don’t take care of our planet properly so we have many problems with our ecology nowadays. I have a surprise for you. Do you see this box? We have already studied the meaning of the signs and this is one of them (учителем показывается знак на коробке) Who can tell me what does it mean?
Students: Watch out!
Teacher: That’s it. Let’s open the box and check it. (учитель открывает коробку). You deal with all these things in everyday life and they somehow connect with our today’s topic of the lesson. Your task is to take out one of them and name it.

Teacher: I think it is interesting for you to know how these things influence our ecology. I’ll give you a text and your task is to find some information about a thing that you have chosen. You are to get ready to tell us the main idea of your story. I give you 2 minutes to do it. You may take notes.

«How do these things pollute our nature?»
When we use batteries we throw them away if they are out of use. Americans throw out 2 billion pounds of batteries a year. Toxic chemicals in batteries can be released into the environment, especially if they are burned. Save your old batteries and take them to a recycling centre. Old batteries litter stayed unchangeable for 500 years
Making aluminium from recycled aluminium uses 90% less energy than making aluminium from scratch. In 1993 alone aluminium can recycling saved more than 11 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, enough to supply the residential electric needs of New York City for six month. The energy saved from 1 recycled aluminium can will operate a television set for three hours. If you throw an aluminium can out of the window, it will still litter the Earth up to 500 years later.
We used to buy all drinks in plastic bottles. Americans use 2 million plastic bottles every year. Unfortunately, some of this packaging doesn’t reach the bins. It becomes litter instead. These bottles can’t be recycled. It takes 500 years to decompose plastic bottles
Only buy soda and other drinks in aluminium cans or glass bottles. Buy milk or juice in cartons. Then recycle them.
These days, people usually do shopping in supermarkets. Some products are packed in paper or plastic bags. We use them with pleasure as it’s convenient but it takes a whole tree to make about 500 paper grocery bags. But plastic bags are worse because they can’t be recycled, and the plastic will never decompose.
Every person likes to eat fruit and vegetables to be healthy and we don’t think about our nature in these cases although peels which we throw away can damage our environment as Banana peel litter lasts up to 6 months for example so we should find a way to reuse it somehow. In America people have a special rubbish bin for this.
Many countries bury and forget about millions of tons of rubbish every year. It is known that in one year, a European family with 2 children throws away about 50 kilos of paper. All of us use a transport in which everybody gets a traffic ticket. When we go out we throw this ticket away and don’t think that this small piece of paper can damage our environment as it takes 1month to decompose traffic ticket.
When we do shopping in supermarkets we see that some goods are in glass containers and in this case food keeps clean and fresh for a long period of time. Some producers do it just to make the food look better. Glass containers cause cuts and can kill or just hurt animals. If we throw it away it’s disposing can last forever.
As far as you know we have a strong winters in Russia and have to wear wool clothes especially wool gloves. And we never think of how they can damage our nature. If we have holes in them we just throw them away into the rubbish bin and buy a new pair. But wool gloves litter stayed unchangeable for 1 year. So try not to throw them away too often.
When we go to the forest to have a picnic we take different tin cans as it is very suitable in such cases. We have a good rest and when tin cans are empty we throw them away and never think that they remain in the forest and on the roadsides and can hurt wild animals or even kill them. More than that they can’t be disposed for100 years.
- We use different deodorants to smell pleasant but many commercial cleaners contain toxic substances that are dangerous to our health and the environment. Nontoxic alternatives are not only as effective and easy to use as their commercial counterparts, but are also safer. But still if we throw away our empty deodorant it takes 100 years to decompose it.
People started to use wax paper cups some years ago as it was very useful especially if you go somewhere on a trip or just drive a car. A wax paper cup is a disposable cup made out of paper and often lined with wax to prevent liquid from leaking out or soaking through the paper. Nowadays if we have a party we may also use wax paper cups in order not to wash dishes afterwards. But don’t you know that it takes 5 years to decompose wax paper cup?
- Every year in Britain each person produces about 60 kilograms of polythene wastes. Making polythene causes pollution. In the town polythene wastes look horrible. But fortunately someone clears it away. In the country side, it remains in the fields and on the roadsides unless the people who live nearby pick it up. The animals can eat polythene bags and die, or put their heads in them and suffocate. We should say that polythene bags litter stayed unchangeable for 300 years

Teacher: Well done, remember this information, please. More than that I am sure you should pick up litter you see as you are walking. Litter is not only ugly but it can be harmful to wildlife. Small animals can get hurt on sharp cans or broken bottles. To prove it let’s check up the second part of your home task. Your task was to make up a dialogue on the picture. You are welcome.

Student: Greenpeace an international environmental pressure group started in the 1960 in Canada.
Greenpeace message is «When you cut down the last tree and kill the last fish, poison the last river, then you will see that you can't eat money»
Student: Friends of the Earth an environmental pressure group. It was founded in 1971. The aim of the group is to protect the environment. The main concerns are air, sea, river and land pollution. FOE has branches in 30 countries
Teacher: So, as you see, an ecology problem is very important for all human beings and there is a day of our planet. Read about it, please
Student: The Earth Day April 22– people demonstrate their concern for a better environment. They plant trees and flowers, feed birds and animals. They also clean the countryside and put litter in the bin. It was first held in 1970.
Teacher: I have a little suggestion, let’s plant a small tree on this day and we’ll help to make our life better. Who is for this idea rise your hand. Thanks!

Teacher: Our lesson is almost at the end and I want you to look at the blackboard. There is a picture of a bold tree here. It hasn’t leaves because of a bad ecological situation.
