III Phonetic activities.
Read and listen to the poem written by Roger McCough.
A millionbillion willion miles from home
Waiting for the bell to go (To go where?)
Why are they so big, other children?
So noisy? So much at home they
Must have been born in uniform.
Lived all their lives in playgrounds.
Spent the years inventing games
That don’t let me in. Games
That are rough, that swallow you up.
What does a lessin look like?
Sounds small and slimy.
They keep them in glassrooms.
Whole rooms made out of glass. Imagine.
I wish I could remember my name.
Mammy said it would come in useful.
Like willies. When there’s puddles.
Yellowwillies. I wish she was here.
I think my name is sewn on somewhere.
Perhaps the teacher will read it for me.
Tea-cher. The one who makes the tea.
Ex. 3 (B), p. 10.
T: look through the poem again and answer these questions:
Can you see any unusual words in this poem?
Why do you think the words are like this?
What words do they stand for?
What are the feelings of the child?
What other evidence of the child’s feelings can you see in the poem?
Examples of answers:
P1: there are a lot od unusual words in this poem, such as: lessin, glassroom, millionbillion willion, yellowwellies, tea-cher. To my mind, they mean lesson, classroom, yellow wellingtons, teacher.
P2: as for me, these words are new for the small child, he mixed them as he doesn’t know exactly what they mean. Besides, he is confused and nervous.
Read and translate the words.

Сдавать экзамен по математике. (Take an examination in Maths).
T: Have you prepared your report? So, let’s listen to them. Are you happy at school?
P1: I can say that I’m happy at school. I like my school the first day I came into the building. You know that appearance is very important. Our school is not big. On the grand floor you can see a gym, a canteen, metal workshops. On the first floor you can see a library, an assembly hall, a computer lab. The headmaster’s office, the medical room, the teacher’s room are also on the first floor. Our school has everything for the pupils. In every classroom you can see flowers and posters on the walls, nice curtains on the windows. But I love my school not only for building. There are many good teachers in my school. They are clever, self-possessed and democratic. Our teachers offer us many interesting activities: we stage plays in our school theatre, visit theatres together, make posters, wall newspapers. My friends study at the same school. Our class is very friendly. I usually invite all my classmates to my birthday parties. That’s why I can say that I am happy at school.
Then pupils ask questions.
P2: What kind of school do you go to?
P3: How many floors are there in your school?
P4: How many lessons do you usually have?
P5: What exams did you take at school?
