Now look at your shits of paper. Here is the text about education in our country. Let’s read the first part and translate it.

Education in Russia

Citizens of Russia have the right for education which is guaranteed by the Constitution. But it is not only a right, it is a duty, too. Every boy and every girl in Russia must go to school. The public educational system in our country incorporates pre-school, general school, specialized secondary and higher education.

Pre-school consists of kindergartens and creches. Children there learn reading, writing and arithmetic. But pre-school education isn't compulsory - children can get it at home.

Compulsory education is for children from 6 or 7 to 17 years of age.

The main link in the system of education is the general school which prepares the younger generation for life and work in modern society. There are various types of schools: general secondary schools, schools specializing in a certain subject, high schools, lyceums and so on. Tuition in most of them is free. The term of study in a general secondary school is 11 years. It consists of primary, middle and upper stages.

There are schools of general education, where the pupils study Russian, Literature, Mathematics, History, Biology, Music, Arts, Foreign Languages. There is also a number of specialized schools, where the pupils get deep knowledge of foreign languages, or Maths, or Physics. At the middle stage of a secondary school the children learn the basic laws of nature and society at the lessons of history, algebra, literature, physics and many others.

After the 9th form pupils have to pass the examinations. Also they have a choice between entering the 10th grade and enter a specialized vocational school.

Pupils who finish the general secondary school, receive a secondary education certificate, giving them the right to enter any higher educational establishment. Entrance examinations are held in July and August. Institutions are headed by rectors; the faculties are headed by the deans.

And now look at the presentation. Translate these sentences from Russian into English.

Pt.II. Translate these sentences into English:

  1. Существует также число специализированных школ, в которых ученики получают глубокие знания иностранных языков, математики или физики.

  2. После 9 класса учащиеся должны сдавать экзамены.

3. Также у них есть выбор между поступлением в 10 класс и поступлением в специализированное профессиональное учреждение.

4. Учащиеся, которые окончили основную общую школу, получают аттестат.

5. Институтами руководят ректоры, факультетами заведуют деканы.

Look at the table and tell me when we use these tenses in passive voice.

1.Read these sentences and tell where passive and where active is.

  2. The dog is standing near the tree.

  3. An apple has been eaten.

  4. This house was built many years ago.

  5. He had read the book before going to sleep.


2.Translate these sentences into English.


1) Эта книга переведена на 10 языков.

2) Этот дом был построен в 1927 году.

3) Пирог был испечён к моему приходу.

4) Пирог печётся сейчас.

5) Когда я пришёл, комнату убирали.

6) Полы только что помыли.

7) Сочинение будет дописано Томом к 2 часам.

8) Эти часы будут куплены Сэмом на следующей неделе.

Translation:

  1. This book is translated into 10 languages.

  2. This house was built in 1927.

  3. The cake had been baked by my coming.

  4. The cake is baking now.

  5. When I came the room was being cleaned.

  6. The floor has just been washed.

  7. The composition will have been written by Tom by 2 a. m.

  8. This clock will be bought by Sam on the next week.


3.Remake these sentences from active into passive.


  1. Rectors head institutions.

  2. Children there learn reading, writing and arithmetic.

  3. Pupils get deep knowledge of foreign languages, or Maths, or Physics.

  4. Mr. Rin will direct the project the next year.

  5. Sandy was washing the floor when I came.

  6. Mr. Simons writes detective stories.

  7. This shop sells computer games.

  8. Tom is reading a book now.

  9. Yesterday I bought a new car.

  10. The procession has opened the award ceremony.

Answers:

  1. Institutions are headed by rectors.

  2. Reading, writing and arithmetic there are learned by children.

  3. Deep knowledge of foreign languages, or Math, or Physics are got by pupils.

  4. This project will be directed by Mr. Rin the next year.

  5. The floor was being washing by Sandy when I came.

  6. Detective stories are written by Mr. Simons.

  8. The book is reading by Tom now.

  9. Yesterday a new car was bought by me.
