Learning Objective: Students will know some vocabulary of fruits and vegetables and be able to use it to give their opinions

on which ones they prefer.

Warm up/Review


10 minutes

To reduce students’ affective filter.


You need to think of a game or an activity using known language.

Desert Island

Explain that students are on a desert island. They need to choose 10 items that they cannot live without. You can provide them with a list of items or they can come up with one. Items could be: Tent – Fishing pole – Water – Torch – Lighter – Rope – Sunblock – iPod – Computer etc.

Students work in pairs and have to put the items in order from the most important (1) to the least important (10).


They can then get together with another pair and try to agree on the correct order.

Introduction


1 minute

To teach the learning objective. In this case you will be teaching ten words related to fruit and vegetables. You need to teach ‘when and how’ these words are used in a real life context.


Remember that we begin with previous knowledge.



Elicit from students.


Use visual aids to present each word.


Have students repeat and work on pronunciation.


Students will also learn how to write these words.




Begin by eliciting what your students’ favourite types of food are (set the scene).


Expect answers: I like Italian, I love Chinese food, I like Indian food etc. Put answers on the board.


Ask: What is your favourite fruit/vegetable?


Show on a PowerPoint presentation / IWB or give out sheets of Harold’s Greengrocer price list (Appendix 1).


Words to be presented: Apple, Pear, Pineapple, Lettuce, Cucumber, Banana, Peach, Tomato, Spinach, Onion.


Tell students to match the fruit and vegetables to the pictures.



Check answers as a class.


Write on the board ‘apples cost 56p/lb’. Elicit sentences for the other items (we assume that they have previously studied how to say quantities in British money).

Ask students randomly what each picture is.


Tell students: You have learned 10 words related to fruit and vegetables. Now let’s practise the words we have just learned.

Students will respond to the questions presented.


Ss respond to the questions.










Students match the fruit and veg in the price list to the pictures.


Students say other vegetables with the prices.

Practice

20 minutes

This stage provides structured, semi-structured and unstructured practice, building fluency and communicative skills.


This structured activity will build speaking skills.

Activity 1 – Structured Activity – Appendix 2


Give students a word search to do in pairs. This is a competition to find the first pair to do it.


Teacher monitors and helps where necessary.


Activity 2 – Semi-structured activity


Students will continue to work in pairs and now they will ask each other the following questions:


Write these questions on the board:

1. Which of these fruits/vegetables do you like best?

2. How often do you eat them?

3. Where do you buy them? 4. Do you prefer vegetables or fruit?


Using the above questions, interview your partner and ask him/her the questions. Then they in turn will ask you the same questions.


Teacher monitors and helps where necessary.





Look for the words and circle them.
















Ss ask each other the questions. Once students finish they need to switch roles.


Students will actively participate.

Production


20 minutes


Students need to write a short dialogue about going out to lunch and having a salad or fruit salad (using the words presented). They will have 10 minutes to write it and practise it. When they are finished they will have the conversation in front of the class as a mini role-play.


Teacher to take notes and evaluate if students are using the language presented effectively.

Students write the dialogue and then do presentations.

Evaluation

To check for learning and retention of both today’s and past lessons

Holding a picture of a fruit or vegetable in one hand, randomly ask students what each word is. Students will be evaluated. The activity will not be graded.

Students will respond to the questions individually.

Application 10 minutes

Give students homework to reinforce learning.

Homework:


Students must go to home and ask their family members what their favorite fruit and vegetables are. Take notes and bring back the next class. You need to interview at least two people.


Take remaining class time to review and discuss yesterday’s homework.



Students will take notes on the homework assignment and complete it at home.
