So, let’s begin our lesson. Before you read the text, answer for my questions:

  • What do you know about Shoqan Ualikhanov?

  • Have you ever seen films about travellers?



  • The theme of our lesson is “Famous travellers”. I think

everybody likes travelling. Look at the blackboard to learn some interesting facts about famous travellers.

  1. Reading. You must read the text again and complete the sentences.

1st group: Shoqan Ualikhanov ____________ in November in 1935. He was a Kazakh scientist, ethnographer and a ___________.

Shoqan spent his ___________ in his father’s traditional yurt. His father sent him to a small ____________ school in 1842 when he was six. Ualikhanov entered the ____________ academy in Omsk in 1847. He travelled in _____________ in the late 1850s.

In 1856 he had his first successful ____________ to the region of Issyq Kul.

2 nd group: In 1857 he went to Russia to report about the ___________ of the expedition and there he became the member of the Russian Geographical Society.

On June 28, 1858, Shokan Ualikhanov began his ____________ expedition.
He had a caravan of 43 men, 101 ___________ and 65 horses. The __________ arrived in Kashgar in early October of 1858. During his travels he collected a lot of materials about traditions and ___________ of the people in the places he visited. He ___________ to his native steppe region because he became seriously ill in the spring of 1861. He __________ on April 10, 1865 at the age of 29. His ____________ are still popular.

1842 – His father sent him to a small private school.

1847- He entered the military academy in Omsk.

1850 – He travelled in Central Asia
1856 - He went to the region of Issyq Kul and had his first successful expedition.

1857 – He went to Russia

1858 – He began his second expedition and arrived in Kashgar.

1861 – He returned to his native steppe.

1865 – He died at the age of 29.
