I . Geographical position
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of 2 large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and about 5500 small islands. Area 244110 sq km. Population 57 million. Capital London
The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea.
The north and west of England are mountainous, but mountains are not very high. BEN NAVIS in Scotland is the highest mountain (1343 m)
There are a lot of rivers in the UK, but they are not very long. The Severn is the largest river and the Thames is the deepest and the most important one.
II . Parts of the country
There are four countries in United Kingdom of Great Britain: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. These countries have their own capitals and their own patron saints, their traditions. The capital of England is London, the capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, the capital of Wales is Cardiff and the capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.
The patron saint of England is St. George'. St. George's Day falls on 23 April and is regarded as England national day.
The patron saint of Scotland is St. Andrew. St. Andrew's Day (the 30th of November) is regarded as Scotland's national day
The patron saint of Ireland is St. Patrick. St. Patrick's Day (the 17-th of March) is considered as a national day in Northern Ireland and an official bank holiday there.
The patron saint of Wales is St. David. St. David's Day (the 1-st of March) is this church festival of St. David. The day is regarded as the national holiday of Wales
III . Symbols
The national anthem is: God save the Queen. It is the oldest in the world, established in 1745 and based on a song of the 17 th century.
The flag of the United Kingdom, known as the Union Jack, is made up of three crosses. The upright red cross on a white background is the cross of the 1St George, the patron saint of England. The white diagonal cross on a blue background is the cross of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The Welsh flag, called the Welsh dragon, represents a red dragon on a white and green background.
Wales is not represented on the Union Flag because by the time the first version of the flag appeared, Wales was already the part of England.

IV. Political system
