Task1. Variant 1.

A VERY MODERN PICTURE

A rich American went to Paris and bought a picture from a modern painter. He went back to his hotel and was going to hang the picture on the wall of his sitting-room; but he could not tell which the top was and which the bottom of the picture was. He turned the picture this way and that, but he could not tell which the top was and which the bottom was.

At last he thought of a plan. He hung the picture in his sitting-room, ordered dinner for two persons and invited the painter to the meal.

When the painter came, the American said nothing to him about the picture.

As the painter was eating his soup, he looked at the picture many times. As he ate his fish, he looked at the picture again. When the fruit came, he rose and walked up to the picture to have a better look at it. At last when they were having their coffee, he understood what was wrong.

“My friend,” he said, “my picture is upside-down.”

“Upside-down? It can’t be!” said the American. “Why didn’t you tell me that before?”

“Well, you see, I was not sure myself,” said the painter. (205)

Task1. Variant 2.

The world of American cinema is so far-reaching a topic that it deserves, and often receives, volumes of its own. Hollywood (in Los Angeles, California), of course, immediately comes to mind, as do the many great directors, actors and actresses it continues to attract and produce. But then, one also thinks of the many independent studios throughout the country, the educational and documentary series and films, the socially-relevant tradition in cinema, and the film departments of universities, such as the University of Southern California (USC), the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) or New York University.

For over 50 years, American films have continued to grow in popularity throughout the world. Television has only increased this popularity.

The great blockbusters of film entertainment that stretch from “Gone with the Wind” to “Star Wars” receive the most attention. A look at the prizes awarded at the leading international film festivals will also demonstrate that as an art form, the American film continues to enjoy considerable prestige. Even when the theme is serious or, as they say, “meaningful”, American films remain “popular”. In the past decade, films which treated the danger of nuclear power and weapons, alcoholism, divorce, inner-city blight, the effects of slavery, the plight of Native Americans, poverty and immigration have all received awards and international recognition. Task 1. Variant 3.

AMERICANS ON THE MOVE

A history of Travel

The history of the United States is a story of people on the move. The Native Americans came to North America many thousands of years ago. Some of them built villages and stayed there, but many moved from place to place. They followed the buffalo and lived in tents.

The first travellers from Europe came to live in an unknown land. At first they stayed near the coast, but then a few brave men went west, far into the country. Two of them were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. In 1804, they started on their long journey from St. Louis, Missouri, to the Pacific Ocean. They followed the Missouri River west, went across the Rocky Mountains and followed the Columbia River to the Pacific. Then they turned around and travelled back to St. Louis. It was a very long journey.

During the next 150 years, millions of poor people came from the old cities of Europe.

They built the new cities of the U. S. and farmed the land. However, they did not always stay in their new cities or on their farms. Many people moved on, deeper and deeper into the new land.

Some followed religious leaders like Joseph Smith. He and his followers, known as the Mormons, built Salt Lake City in Utah. Others went to look for gold. After the California Gold Rush in 1849, San Francisco grew from a village to a city in only a few years.

Task1. Variant4

AUTOMOBILES

Why do Americans like automobiles more than other things? Is it because they need them? Maybe, in many places in the U. S., people can travel only by car. Maybe it’s because of the cars’ wonderful names – Cadillac, Pontiac, Buick, and Chevrolet. Or maybe it’s because many American cars are so big and beautiful. Americans are buying more small cars now, but their cars are often much bigger than foreign ones.

There are 160 million automobiles on American roads. Some people feel that there are too many. They are tired of waiting in traffic jams. They can never find a place to park.

It’s too late now. You can’t take the cars away. Most modern cities have many big roads, but few trains or buses. Modern houses are often a long way from schools and stores. Cars are necessary to many people now.

Detroit is the centre of the American automobile industry. The factory managers of Detroit understand that most Americans want to buy new cars often. Many families sell their old car once a year and buy another. They want the newest and the best.

Automobiles can tell you a lot about people. For example the fast little sports car belongs to a young businesswoman. She works in the centre of a large city. She needs to drive quickly and park easily. The big old-fashioned pick-up truck with the broken door belongs to a farmer who lives miles away from town. (242)

Task1. Variant5.

WILD AMERICA

The United States is a large country with many different natural wonders. It goes from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the islands of Hawaii in the Pacific, and from cold, snowy northern Alaska to sunny Florida in the southeast. The U.S. has almost every kind of weather. Also; it has many kinds of land – rocky coasts, dry empty deserts, powerful rivers, wide plains and grasslands, lakes of all sizes, high mountains, great forests, sunny beaches, and lands of endless winter.

More than 235 million people live in the U. S. but the country is very big, so there still a lot of open space and natural scenery outside the cities. Americans have tried to save many of the most beautiful wild areas of the United States. There are more than three hundred national seashores, national forests, and recreation areas. The Grand Canyon, Yosemite Valley, and Yellow Stone are among famous national parks. National forests are areas like the great redwood forests of the Pacific Northwest. National seashores protect coastal areas and keep them open for the public to enjoy. Recreation areas include lakes and parks in and around the cities such as the Golden Gate Recreation Area near San Francisco. These places are popular for boating, swimming, and other outdoor activities. There are also many state parks and forest areas. In these parks and wild lands, you can enjoy the beauty and power of wild America.

Task1. Variant6.

THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN.

By this time the reader has understood that the young man, who was sleeping with his hands around the dog’s neck, was Maurice Gerald. When he woke up, he felt much better. But still he couldn’t walk. He knew that Tara would protect him, but the dog couldn’t carry him, then he had an idea. He wrote some words on a piece of paper, tied it around the dog’s neck and told him to run home.

“And now, when the dog is not here,” said Maurice, “I must protect myself against the coyotes. I am sure they will come as soon as they see that I am alone.”

A big tree stood near him. The tree had two thick branches. Maurice took off the cloak he was wearing and tied it to these branches. Then, with much difficulty, he climbed up the tree and settled on his cloak. Coyotes could not climb trees, he knew it. So he was quite safe now.

The Coyotes came soon. They tried to jump and climb the tree, but soon they saw that they could not reach the man. So they sat or lay down under the tree and began to wait. A long time passed, and Maurice felt that he was thirsty again. Every minute he was more and more thirsty; he could not think about anything else. The stream was near, but he could not get down.
