Та?уэр («башня»), Лондонский Тауэр (англ. Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, Tower of London) — крепость, стоящая на северном берегу Темзы, — исторический центр Лондона, одно из старейших сооружений Англии и один из главных символовВеликобритании, занимающий особое место в истории английскойнации. Как писал герцог Эдинбургский в своей книге, посвященной 900-летию Тауэра, «за свою историю Лондонский Тауэр был крепостью, дворцом, хранилищем королевских драгоценностей, арсеналом, монетным двором, тюрьмой, обсерваторией, зоопарком, местом, привлекающим туристов».
Основание крепости Тауэр приписывается Вильгельму I. Посленормандского завоевания Англии, Вильгельм I принялся возводить оборонительные замки для устрашения покорённых англосаксов. Одним из самых больших в 1078 году стал Тауэр. Деревянный форт заменили громадной каменной постройкой — Великим Тауэром, представляющим собой четырёхугольное сооружение, размерами 32 х 36 метров, высотой около 30 метров. Когда позднее новый король Англии приказал побелить здание, оно получило название Белый Тауэр (White Tower), или Белая башня. Впоследствии, при короле Ричарде Львиное сердце, были возведены ещё несколько башен различной высоты и два ряда мощных крепостных стен. Вокруг крепости был вырыт глубокий ров, делающий её одной из самых неприступных крепостей в Европе.

The Tower of London is one of the most interesting historic sights of London. It is situated in the center of London on the north bank of the River Thames
The Tower was founded during the Norman Conquest of England sometimes at the end of 1066.
It has 20 towers and the most important of all is the White Tower, which was built by William the Conqueror.
It has once been a royal palace, a fortress, a prison, a place of execution and even a zoo. Today, it’s mainly a historical museum.
While it was a royal palace, King Henry III kept three leopards, an elephant, a polar bear and several ravens there. Soon these animals were sent to Regent’s Park and only ravens stayed on.
While it was a prison, many noblemen were locked up there, including kings and queens. The Tower and its prisoners were guarded by the Beefeaters. At present times they work mainly as guides.
The Tower was also an execution place. Many, like Lady Jane Grey, Anne Boleyn, Sir Thomas More, lost their heads there.
The black ravens live in the gardens of the Tower. The English people like them very much. A man looks after the ravens and gives them meat in the morning and in the evening. It is believed that they bring good luck to Britain. In case they leave the Tower, something bad can happen.
Now the Tower of London is a museum and many people from other countries come to see it. They see the dark stone halls with small windows and thick doors. The walls of the Tower are five metres thick.
The Crown Jewels are one of the most interesting sights in the Tower. They are carefully looked after. Also in the museum visitors can see many old guns.
