Geographical Position

Scotland is the country occupying the northern third of the island Great Britain. It is separated from England mainly by high Cheviot Hills and the river Tweed. To the west from Scotland there is Northern Ireland. The southern coast of Scotland is inverted to Irish Sea. Borders of Scotland remain constant almost 500 years.

Scotland was founded in 843.

The Flag of Scotland represents a dark blue panel with white (in heraldry silver) slanting Andrew’s cross. The width of the strips forming a cross, should make 1/5 from height of a flag.

Apostle Andrew

• Apostle Andrew is considered to be the patron of Scotland, according to a legend. Images of apostle serve as symbols of Scotland .

The Coat of Arms

• The historical arms of Scotland is a gold red field with dark blue arms (claws and language), a heraldic lion surrounded by double red line with grown lilies

Tartan.

Tartan is a fabric with an ornament from horizontal and vertical stripes. National clothes of Scotland and in particular kilts are sewed from a fabric with such ornament. In Russia its name is "shotlandka" . There are now 4000 variants of tartan.

The Flower of the Thistle

• The flower of the thistle is the traditional symbol of Scotland. It is represented, in particular on bank notes. According to the legend, in XIII century coastal settlements of Scotts suffered from Vikings’ attacks. Once it was possible to avoid an unexpected night attack due to that Vikings came barefoot into the thickets of the Scottish thistle and gave out themselves

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is at the heart of the Scottish capital.

The castle is built on a volcanic rock. The Castle Rock is the remains of a volcanic pipe.

• Edinburgh Castle is also the home of the One O'Clock Gun. This is fired every day except Sunday and Christmas Day exactly at 1.00pm to provide everyone with an accurate check for their clocks and watches.
• The 'Time Gun' was established in 1861 as a time signal for ships.
• The gun could easily be heard by ships 2 miles (3.2 km) away .

• A series of performances known as the Edinburgh Military Tattoo take place each year during August.

• The basis of the performance is a parade of the pipes and drums of the Scottish regiments.

• Since the first performance in 1950 the Tattoo has developed a complex format which includes many invited performers from around the world.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

takes place every August and September and is known throughout the world.

For 90 minutes on five or six nights a week, 600 people perform in the square in front of the Castle.

The performers play military music and march to it.

The Royal Mile

The Canongate

The Canongate forms one of the lower parts of the Edinburgh's Royal Mile as it makes its way downhill from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The Royal Mile runs from Edinburgh Castle at the top of the Castle Rock, down to Holyrood Palace.

Founded as a monastery in 1128, the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh is The Queen's official residence in Scotland.

Royal Dining Room

A Monastery of the Holy Rood was founded by David I, King of Scots, in 1128.

The foundation is said to have been an act of thanksgiving for the king's miraculous escape from the horns of a stag while hunting near Edinburgh on Holy Cross Day ("rood" means "cross").

Greyfriars Bobby

• Bobby belonged to John Gray, who worked for the Edinburgh City Police as a night watchman.
• The two were inseparable for approximately two years.
• On 8 February 1858, Gray died of tuberculosis.

• Bobby, who survived Gray by fourteen years, is said to have spent the rest of his life sitting on his master's grave.

Calton hill

Calton Hill is one of Edinburgh's main hills, set right in the city centre.

Princes Street

is the most beautiful street of the New Town.

Princes Street

The street was originally called Store Street due to a large government store at the lower end.

• Princes Street is the southern busy street of Edinburgh's New Town.

• The street has almost no buildings on the south side, allowing panoramic views of the Old Town, Edinburgh Castle, and the valley between.

• The north side is lined with shops. Several UK high brands such as H&M, Marks & Spencer and Topshop are located along Princes Street.

Walter Scott (1771 –1832)

• Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, and poet, popular throughout much of the world during his time.
• His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe , Rob Roy , The Lady of the Lake , Waverley , The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor .

• The Scott Monument is the largest monument to a writer in the world. It commemorates Sir Walter Scott.

• There are 287 steps to the top of the Scott Monument, from where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Edinburgh and the surrounding countryside.

• The White marble statue built in his honour depicts Sir Walter sitting after having written a text with his feather and his dog Maida by his side.

• The statue was designed by John Steell.

Athur's Seat is the main peak of the group of hills situated in the centre of the city of Edinburgh, about a mile to the east of Edinburgh Castle.

It is 250 meters high.
