From Leisure

                                            W.H. Davis (1871-1940)

What is this life if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare?

No time to see, when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see in broad daylight,

Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,

And watch her feet, how they can dance.

A poor life this is if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare

Alаn – Good evening, dear guests!

Kate – I’m Kate White

                                               Alаn – I’m Alan Smith

Kate – We are glad to see you at our show “Let them talk” and our theme is “Lifestyles”

Alаn – Today we are going to discuss different problems, such as urban and country life, our activities and ecology

Kate - We shall begin with the question “Are you a country mouse or a city mouse?”

Alаn - Let me introduce our first guests Annabel and Sarah. The girls took part in a reality TV show.  They swapped families and schools for a week.

Kate – So, our first guest is Annabel.  She is 14 and she’s from London. (выходит) (аплодисменты) Good evening, my dear, tell us about your experience.

Annabel   - Good evening. I lived on a farm with Sarah’s family. Everyone got up at 5 am because there was a lot to do on the farm. I helped Sarah’s mum to milk the cow and feed the chickens. The animals were lovely, but I couldn’t stand the smell.

Kate - Oh, I see … What about school?

Annabel   -  It was too far from Sarah’s place. I went to school by school bus. Frankly speaking it wasn’t very convenient. The school was very small, but everyone was so friendly.

Kate - Did you enjoy living on a farm?

Annabel    - Learning about farming was interesting. The fresh air was nice, but it was too quiet there. To tell the truth I felt isolated. I missed the hustle and bustle of London.  In the city the streets are crowded but you have everything close at hand. I think I’m a city mouse.

Kate  -  Thank you, Annabel.

Alаn - Now meet our next guest – Sarah! She lives on a farm in the north of Scotland. In a reality show she swapped her family and school for Annabel’s life in London.  So, Sarah, did you like your staying in a big city?

Sarah   -   Firstly I liked it a lot. We went shopping, visited cinemas, museums and art galleries.

Alаn   - What can you say about your new school?

Sarah   -   I travelled to school by tube. The school was huge. I enjoyed the lessons, but most of all I loved the facilities. The computer room and the swimming pool were my favourites.

Alаn  -  What about your new classmates?

Sarah   -  As for my new friends they were (very) helpful.

Alаn   -  So, you enjoyed your city life, didn’t you?

Sarah   -  50/50. You see, after some days I felt tired. It was always noisy there. I heard the traffic all night. I missed the beautiful landscapes and the people from my hometown. In short I got a bit homesick.

Alаn   -   So, you are a country mouse, aren’t you?

Sarah   - Yes, I am. I think so.

Kate   -   Girls, thank you for your interesting stories. And now I’d like to ask our audience. Where do you prefer to live – in a city or in a country?

Kate   -   Are you a country mouse or a city mouse?

(Student 1) -  Peace and quiet are very important to me. I can’t stand crowded streets and heavy traffic. I’m (an absolutely) a real country mouse.

(Student 2)  -  I live in a city, but I’d like to live in a country. In my opinion people can’t lead healthy lifestyle in big cities because of constant noise, pollution and heavy traffic, besides people often feel stressed there.

Kate  -  Why do you think so?

(Student 2) -  For example, high cost of living. I mean the city life is very expensive.

(Student 3) - I see what you mean but what about high rate of unemployment in small towns and villages? I should say there are some great advantages of urban life. In big cities there are shops, restaurants, cinemas, theatres, at last sports centres. They make our life more interesting and comfortable.

Alаn  - You’ve mentioned a serious problem – unemployment. Many young people have to deal with unemployment when they finish their studies. What do our visitors think of this problem?

(Student 4)  – It’s a hundred percent true. I live in the country and I’m very nervous now. I’m sure the citizens are more advantaged in education. They can attend lectures and preparatory courses and therefore have more chances to enter this or that university. After graduating from the university the residents of big cities are more likely to find a prestigious and well-paid job. They are more communicative, more experienced and they have more friends, relatives to help them.

(Student 5) - I agree with you. In a city it is easier to do what you want. But life in a big city is much more stressful than that in the country. Besides, there are a lot of other problems. I mean ecology.

(Student 6)  -  I’m absolutely sure that it’s the choices we make about our own life styles that are having an impact on our beautiful planet.

Allan. – What do you mean?

(Student 7)  – In fact there are hundreds of little things that an ecologically conscious person can do. Say, you can take more showers, fewer baths and keep the taps turned off to avoid water leakage.

(Student 8)  – To keep the water clean it is necessary to use less washing up liquids that contain phosphates, harmful to fish if they get into the river.

(Student 9) – When we go shopping we should take our own plastic shopping bags instead of buying at the check out.

Kate – To my mind nowadays more and more people are getting ecologically wise. Some time ago a group of students came up with the idea of making a school club to help save the environment. They are here now. Meet them. (выходит  группа  учащихся-члены клуба “Nature Madness Club”) Who will begin?…

(Student 10)    -  Our motto is “Think globally, act locally.”

(Student 11)  –  And “Take action!”

Kate -   What does it mean?

(Student 11)    -  It means you shouldn’t only discuss global environmental problems, you should take action! And you should act in your area where you live.

Kate  -  Tell us some words about your work. (презентация «Take action!»

(Student 12)    -  We take part in lots of after-school activities. At first we took classes to find out about pollution, recycling and conservation. The whole team helped to make the classes more interesting by using pictures and videos and so on.

(Student 13)    -  After that we organized different events and activities such as recycling or clean-up days, planting trees and helping stray animals.

Kate  -  I know that the mayor of your town gave each student a gold medal for their good work.

(Student 13)   - That’s true.

Teacher  -  I’m Alicia Morton. I’m their teacher. I’m very proud of my students. They show that you don’t have to wait until you’re grown up to do important things!

Allan.-  So the motto of their club is “Take action.” Our next guest lives according to this motto. He is a famous sportsman, a basketball coach. Attention to the screen. (презентация о баскетболе)

                   Аnd now meet Henry Bright

Henry Bright  -  Hello! Nice to meet you.

Allan  -  Nice to meet you  too. You were born in a small town. But in spite of this fact, you’ve become a world champion. How have you managed to do it?

Henry Bright  - You see, when I was four I saw a basketball game and I said to my mum “I have to be there”  I began to train. But my career was almost ended when our local gym was closed and our coach left for the capital of the country.  So when I was eleven years old I had to move to London. Now my dream has come true. I’m a champion. But a lot of my friends failed, because they were not able to go to a big city as I did.

Allan.  –  You are dead right. The best coaches, the best gyms and swimming pools are in big cities. Only in a big city you can have a chance to become a famous sportsman.

Henry Bright  -  It goes without saying that life in a big city has got a lot of disadvantages. You have just talked about it. But whatever the disadvantages are, I personally wouldn’t swap life in the city for anything in the world.

Kate  –  But last week I read an interview where you told that you missed your native place. Is it true?

Henry Bright  - Of course, it is. You know, there my parents, my relatives, my schoolmates live. And that’s all.

Kate  –  Thank you Henry for your coming to our show and for your interesting story.

Allan  –  So, our next guest is waiting. When she was young she dreamt to live in a small village, have a big family and go gardening. Let’s ask her: “Have her dreams come true?” So, Rachel.

Rachel  –  Hello, everybody!

Allan   –   How beautiful you are!

Rachel  -  Thank you!  I’m sorry but I’ve totally changed my mind. Now I’m wild about city life. The main reason why I like it is that there is so much going on. There are a lot of theatres, a lot of cinemas, art galleries, museums, libraries.  And besides I’m a singer and for me it’s impossible to work anywhere else.

Allan  –  I see. Today’s theme is very important and we can discuss it for a long time.  Unfortunately, time is short. But one more thing. One day I heard a phrase: “Only a madman should chose to live in a large Modern City”

Kate  -  But there is one more saying by Samuel Johnson: “ When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”

Allan  –  So if you are tired of fun, pleasure, comfort and excitement a big modern city offers you, you are either tired of life or most probably need some relaxing break in the country for a change.

Kate  –  As a proverb says “East or West – home is best” Wherever you live it depends on you if you are happy or not.

Allan  -  And now let’s listen to our loved Rachel and enjoy her singing.
