The Best City in the World

You've never been

In our city of light,

Never dreamed till dusk

above the evening river.

You haven't wandered off with your friends

across the large avenues,

That means you haven't seen

The best city in the world.

My song sets sail, my heart sings,

The songs are about you, Moscow!

My song sets sail, my heart sings,

The songs are about you, Moscow!

Come to us in Moscow

And walk along the Arbat street

Absorb yourself in Tverskaya Street

Into the noise of the green alleys.

At least take a look once,

How the girls dance

On the great hands

Of the blue squares (floors).

My song sets sail, my heart sings,

The songs are about you, Moscow!

Present you variants…

You can have a look at the Russian version of the song.

3. Let`s find out the most beautiful places of Moscow. You have Moscow word search on your desks. You should cross them out horizontally. Work in groups, please.

3 minutes are given for this work. Let`s start. (музыка)

4. Now we invite you to the Moscow video excursion. Tick the sights which will be mentioned in the video. Welcome to Moscow Travel Guide…

Moscow is situated in western Russia сlose to the country`s border with the Ukraine, Belorus and Estonia.

Lying on the Moskva River it is the country`s capital and its largest and richest city.

Moscow holds a special place in the world`s imagination. Opulent, spectacular and grandiose Moscow has always been at the epicenter of some of the history`s most important moments.

It echoes with stories of triumph, tragedy and innovation. Stories of legendary tsars and literary greats… Political revolutions and the international space race which changed the world forever.

Today Moscow continues to fascinate. It has population of more than 11 million people, it is the most important industrial, cultural and educational centre of Russia.

There is no better place to hear the whispered tales of Moscow`s past than in Red Square – Moscow`s heart. Admire St. Basil`s Cathedral, a building so magnificent, that according to the legend, Ivan the Terrible had the architect`s eyes removed so he could never again build anything so beautiful. The Kremlin is another Moscow icon and it has been home to the city`s ruling elite for a thousand years. Visit the Cathedral of the Archangel, the Cathedral of Annunciation and Ivan the Great`s Bell Tower, all within red walls.

Many of Moscow`s most famous stories have been forged in the fires of war. Pass through gates into Alexander Garden. The park pays tribute to Moscow`s unbreakable spirit and is home to the Tomb of the unknown soldier.

Nearby Victory Park is another powerful tribute to those who fell defending the city including the millions of soviet soldiers who died in the Second World War.

The people always dreamed about space travelling and flying to different stars. In the 20th century this dream came true. The first satellite «Sputnik-1» was launched on the 4th of October 1957. It was the unmanned spacecraft. The first leaving creature entered the space on the 3th of November 1957. It was the dog Laika on board of «Sputnik-2». The Russian spacecraft «Vostok-1» started with Juri Gagarin on board from the cosmodrome Baikonur on the 12th of April 1961. This spaceship carried the first Russian cosmonaut around the Earth. Gagarin was the first human in the history of mankind who had a possibility to look at our planet from space and to experience the weightless environment. He stayed on the low earth orbit for 108 minutes. Visit the monument of the Conquerors of Space: a towering memorial which celebrates the aerospace triumphs of the soviet people. Learn more about the space race and the epic contest between the world`s super powers at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonauts. Immerse yourself in one of Moscow`s proudest stories that of Yuri Gagarin who shocked the rest of the world and became the national hero when he became the first ever men in space.

In Moscow artists and literary greats are honoured as heroes just as much as adventurers. Visit the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts to see some classic works of Russian and European masters.

Watch a performance at the Bolshoi, one of the oldest and most renowned theatres in the world.

Walk the same as some of the greatest writers including Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Chekhov. There is such a proud literary tradition in this city that many of its beautiful parks are named after influential poets and authors.

Relax beside the fountain in Pushkin Square or stroll along the boulevards in Gorky Park, Moscow`s famous central park. Numerous large parks and recreation areas include Gorky Central Park, the forested Izmailovo and Sokolniki parks, and Ostankino Park, with its Botanical gardens. There are a lot of old sculptures in the streets of the city. Moscow is getting more modern and beautiful nowadays. Sculptures and public artworks have been added making it a fascinating place to explore.

But perhaps the best way to understand how the old and new coexist in Moscow is with a trip underground. Take a ride on a Moscow Metro more like an art and history than one of the most efficient public transport systems in Europe. With opulent marble walls, grandiose chandeliers and heroic artworks each of the early stations has its own story to tell of the Russia`s culture, heroism and technology.

Moscow has great Russian cuisine. Taste Russian blinis with caviar, borsch and pelmeni. They are so tasty and nutritious. The city coffee houses and restaurants remain a place where Muscovites come together to share their own stories over rich traditional meals. As your time in this city draws to a close you`ll come to realize Moscow is one of the world`s greatest stories from epic sweeping sagas that changed the world to small tales of loss, luck and happiness. But there is always room for more. So, come and create your own Moscow story.
