Hello, boys and girls and our dear guests! I am glad to see you. I hope you are fine. Today you are going to take part in an exciting competition “London and its places of interest”.
So I want you to be very active and careful. Are you ready? OK! Let’s begin!
We are going to play and speak about London. We’ll check what you know about this beautiful city. Do you know the expression “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life” What does it mean? (На экране высвечивается выражение. Учитель выслушивает ответы учащихся с их догадками о значении выражения) Good.
It’s time to begin our competition. We have 4 teams and each team should introduce itself. You will have different tasks. Jury will give you scores. At the end of the competition we shall find out who the winner is. So, let's begin. I wish you good luck! (Учитель приветствует учащихся и знакомит их с правилами игры).

Now, the 1st team introduce yourselves. Tell us your names and motto.

II. Thesecondtask.
I’ll describe different places of interest of London. Listen to me very attentively, guess what place of interest I’ve described and raise your hands. Match it with one of the pictures on the slides. If one of the teams doesn’t know the answer another teams can answer and get a score.

The first slide is for the team “…..”. There are many old and new beautiful parks in London. This park is the largest one. It is one of the most popular places of Londoners during the summer days. The park is famous for its Speaker’s Corner. (Hyde Park)
This description is for the second team“…..”. It is a wonderful building. The Queen Victoria Memorial is situated in front of it. It takes you ten minutes to get from this building to Trafalgar Square. The Queen of Great Britain lives there. (Buckingham Palace)
The description for the third team is the following: It is one of the greatest English churches. It is not far from the Tower of London. The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It is a fine building with many columns and towers. In one of the towers there is one of the largest bells in the world. (St. Paul’s Cathedral)
The fourth slide is for the team “…..”. It is more than nine hundred years old. There are many monuments and statues there, many English kings and queens are buried there. It is famous for the Poet’s Corner. It is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. (Westminster Abbey)
They say it is the most beautiful place in London. In the middle of it a monument of Admiral Nelson is situated. The monument includes four bronze lions. There are two fountains in it. (Trafalgar Square)
It is a symbol of London. It stands near the Houses of Parliament. It is a big bell. You hear it every hour. It weights 13,7 kilograms. (Big Ben)
III. The third task. It is called hometask. You have been given to make handwork, to make one of the sightseeing of London from papers or hard papers, wood and etc. So, teams represent your works.
IV. The fourth task. The name of the next task is “Camomile”. Please, tear the petals away one by one and answer the questions which you will find there.

Why do the English people call the clock Big Ben? (The English people call the clock Big Ben because the man in charge of the building was Sir Benjamin Hall. This man was very tall and workers called him Big Ben.)
How do people call the monument which is situated in Trafalgar Square? (People call the monument, which is situated in Trafalgar Square, Nelson’s Column)
How do people call the museums in Trafalgar Square? ( People call the museums in Trafalgar Square – the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery)
- Each team can get from zero to 3 points. One point is given for every right answer.

V. Task 5
- Let’s do the task number five. It calls the right word combination. Your task is to make combination from these words and translate them; they are the names of sightseeing of London.

Two pictures of London sights (one for each team) are cut into small pieces. The teams have 3 min to arrange the pieces and to guess the place of interest shown in the picture. Don’t forget to raise the card with your team number up if your answer is right you will get a point.
(Gherkin - The Gherkin, officially known by its street address 30 St. Mary Axe, is a 41 story skyscraper built in 2004 in the financial center of London. The building received several awards for its unique design.
City Hall - In 2002, the Mayor of London moved from the classic County Hall to this modern glass and steel structure. It houses the Greater London Authority, London's city government.)
