Цели: развитие навыков говорения, чтения и письма; совершенствование лексики по теме; развитие речи, памяти и мышления; привитие любви к иностранному языку.

Оборудование: раздаточный материал, учебник, магнитофон, карточки с заданиями, рабочая тетрадь.

Today we are speaking about Mass Media. What do you think of Television?

1. What are your accotiations with Television?

TELEVISION

Relax, rest, soap, languages, famous people, party and so on.

When I hear the word television, I think about…

1. Open your books Ex.19 p.67

Do you believe that the media brings people closer? Give your reasons.

Example: While listening to the radio or watching television people learn a lot about the life style in other countries.

Use: study the languages spoken all over the world, learn about the history of their own country, realize how much in common they have with other peoples, choose the places they would like to visit…

1. Ex. 27 p. 69 Work in groups. Write your own mass media mini-dictionary for the following words and exchange. Use the dictionary if necessary. Put the words in alphabetic order. I give 5 minutes.

Example: A documentary – is a program which gives facts and information about a particular subject.

1. Ex. 28 p.69 Do you mind television? Listen, read, act out:

Martin: What have you got?

Sharon: It’s a magazine/ It’s a quiz magazine.

Martin: What is it like?

Sharon: It’s fairly good. Here’s the quiz. First question for you. Do you like watching television? Yes, I do. / NO, I don’t ./ I don’t mind.

Martin: Yes, I do.

Sharon: Second question: do you like holidays?

Martin: I don’t like holidays.

Sharon: Third question: Do you like shopping?

Martin: I don’t know.

Sharon: It’s “Yes”, “No” or “I don’t mind”.

Martin: OK? I don’t mind shopping.

Sharon: Fourth question: Do you like salad?

Martin: No, I don’t like salad

Work in groups. Think of your own quiz on one of the following topics:

2. Newspapers and magazines

3. Films, cartoons and videos

1. Listen to the text “TV or not TV” and answer the question: Why is TV often called “the window on the world?”

Read and translate the text “TV or not TV”.

And now answer some questions:

1. How often do you watch TV?

2. What are your favourite programmes?

3. Which is your favourite channel?

4. The average Russian teenager spends about 20 hours a week in front of the TV-set. What about you?

5. Do you agree that television has the power to educate?

6. What do you think of commercials? Do they annoy you?

7. Do you enjoy watching “soaps”?

8. Do you think that there’s too much violence on TV?

9. Do you believe that violence on TV may turn people into criminals?

10. Some people say that television kills conversation. Do you agree?

1. a) Write the TV programmes from the box in order of their importance for you. The first one is the programme you enjoy most of all, the last one is the programme you like least of all.

Example: I can’t say that I like watching Hidden Camera very much because it’s not very intelligent. I watch it only when I have absolutely nothing to do.
