Lesson plan for the textbook "Total English" Pre-Intermediate. It's a grammar lesson itroducing and clarifying the meaning of the verbs "should", "have to", "can". It is given in a 'guided discovery' way. All the stages of the lesson are described.

Lesson plan
Level: Pre-Intermediate;
Lesson aims: To introduce and clarify the meaning of the verbs “Should”, “Have to”, “can”, their pronunciation and form and practise new grammar in exercises
( in affirmative and negative forms);
Sub-aims: To practise new grammar and vocabulary in controlled or semi-controlled speech.
To develop skills for dialogical speech.
Materials/aids text book “Total English” Pre-Intermediate, p. 51, Handouts and PCP.
Lesson stage
Greeting, showing elicited examples from the text they have just read.
The teacher shows the sentences from the text 2 with modal verbs.
Pre-grammar teaching.
Ask pupils to find grammar in the text and clarify the meaning.
Eg. Men have to go into the army.
Military service shouldn’t be compulsory.
I don’t have to do military service because I’ve got health problems.
I can’t go out every night.
I can do a lot of things.
Questions: (Some examples):
Do all men want to go to the army?
Must they all go the army?
If a person is ill, has health problems, does the army want such a soldier?
Is it possible for me to go out every night?
Is it Easy for me to do a lot of things? Do I know how to do them?
T. gives the introduction of new modal verbs. Pupils work out the rules for themselves.
Guided discovery of the language material. Pair work.
Clarify the meaning of the words: Choice, obligation, permission, to be permitted
Ask pupils to complete the Active grammar box
Check in pairs
Check on board
V. Controlled practice
Pupils work individually first.
Then check in pairs. Then with the whole class on board (Drilling)
Practice of new grammar material in listening
a) Listening for gist.
Listen to the dialogue and find out what is it about, what is the main theme of discussion
Work in pairs.
b) Listening for specific information. Find out necessary information with verbs of permission and obligation. (True/False sentences)
c) Check the answers in pairs, then on board.
d) Make dialogues on the topic with new grammar material.
