London is the capital of England. It lies on river Thames. It has a population of over 8.6 million people. It’s an old city. London is famous for its historic buildings as St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament, where you can see and hear the famous clock, Big Ben. It’s also famous for its parks. There are a lot of green squares too. There are five in the city centre. Children’s favourite place is Hamleys, is the biggest toyshop in the world. London has problems with traffic and pollution. Over one million people a day use the London underground , but there are still too many cars on the streets.
London is a centre for business and for tourism. There are a lot of cinemas, theatres and museums. People from all over the world visit London every year. It has about about ten thousand streets . Most of them are not very wide. Oxford Street is London’s important shopping centre.
Plans for the Tower Bridge were devised around 1876 when the east of London became extremely crowded and a bridge across the Thames in that area of the city seemed a necessity.
Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square, the largest square in London, is often considered the heart of the city.
The square was originally called Charing.
St. Paul's Cathedral
St. Paul's Cathedral has had an eventful history. Five different churches were built at this site.
Big Ben
Big Ben is one of London's best-known landmarks the clock inside the tower was the world's largest when it was installed in the middle of the nineteenth century. The name Big Ben actually refers to the clock's hour bell, the largest of the clock's five bells.
Hamleys is the oldest and largest toy shop in the world and one of the world's best-known retailers of toys. Hamleys rich history began with William Hamley opened his first shop in London in 1760. Some 255 years later, Hamleys as the Finest Toy Shop in the World.
Buckingham Palace
The Buckingham Palace. The Buckingham Palace - is the Royal residence. It was built in 1703. It is now the official home of Queen Elizabeth. There are nearly six hundred rooms and 3 miles of red carpet. Buckingham Palace is like a small town, with a police station, a hospital, a bar, a cinema and a swimming pool.
