Canada’s history is an exciting story of development of a vast wilderness into a great nation. Most experts believe that the first people who lived on this land came from Asia about 15 000 years ago. They came over a land bridge that once connected Asia and North America. Their descendants are known today as Indians. The ancestors of the Eskimos came to Alaska after them probably about 5000 years ago.

The early period of Canadian History passed in the struggle between the two powers France and England. The French played the main role in the early colonization of Canada. In 1605 Samuel de Champlain founded the settlement of Port Royal, around which the French colony of Arcadia grew up, which later was repeatedly attacked by the English. In 1608 Champlain founded the township of Quebec, which later become the centre of a large French colony, named New France.
The two largest tribes of Canadian Indians, the Algonquins and the Iroquois, were deadly enemies and constantly at war with each other. They too became involved in the struggle, the Algonquins on the French side and the Iroquois on the British side.
France set up a colony in eastern Canada in the early 1600 s. Great Britain gained control of the country in 1763.
Canada gained its independence from Britain in 1931. During the middle of 20th century, hard-working Canadians turned their country into an economic giant.
