Урокнатему «English Speaking Countries»
«GreatBritain»
Great Britain, the United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are English – speaking countries. Their nature, weather, climate and the way of life of people there differ. Each country has its own history, customs, traditions, its own holidays and festivals. But they all have a common language, English.
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland make one state – the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is situated on the British Isles. England is in the south of the island of Great Britain, Scotland is in the north, Wales is in the west. Northern Ireland is situated in the north-eastern part of Ireland.
The capital of Great Britain is London.
The name Britain is very old. The tribes of the first people who lived on the island were called Britons, so Britain was the land of the Britons. In the fifth century some tribes from the northern part of the continent of Europe landed in Britain. Several states were formed; one of them was East Anglia, the land where the Angles lived. Some time later the southern part of the country was called England.
Little by little England became the strongest of all the states on the British Isles. In the 15th century it conquered Wales. After many wars between England and Scotland both countries were united under one king, and became a powerful state. Its name has been Great Britain since then.
