Разработка урока в 10 классе: «Happiness: what is it?»

Пояснительная записка.

Перед современной школой стоит задача гражданского воспитания подрастающего поколения, воспитание обучающихся, готовых жить в правовом гуманистическом обществе. Анализ документов, отражающих проблему воспитания школьников, позволяет сделать вывод о том, что на сегодняшний день одним из государственных приоритетов в области образования является воспитание гражданственности, патриотизма, трудолюбия, уважения к правам и свободам человека, любви к Родине, к семье, к окружающей природе. При этом иностранный язык как учебная дисциплина имеет большой воспитательный потенциал, который в настоящее время необходимо использовать для приобщения школьников к осознанию культурного наследия не только своего народа, но и народов других стран, для поддержания стремления обучающихся к осуществлению межличностного и межкультурного общения, поскольку изучение иностранного языка помогает осуществить социокультурное обогащение мировосприятия и мировидения изучающих иностранный язык в процессе совершенствования их иноязычной коммуникативной компетенции. Изучение иностранного языка, как средство гражданского воспитания, помогает формированию у юных граждан России навыков гражданского поведения, помогает им включиться в жизнь демократического общества, а также положительно влияет на процесс изучения языка как учебного предмета. Положительное отношение к иностранному языку, культуре народа, носителя данного языка, понимание важности изучения иностранного языка, потребность пользоваться им как средством общения, способствуют приобщению учащихся к общечеловеческим ценностям, помогают им осознать свою планетарную принадлежность. В качестве примера гражданского воспитания на уроке английского языка приводится учебное занятие в 10 классе, которое является обобщающим в цикле 5 “ Family Issues”.

Оборудование: ТСО- компьютер (текст для чтения и текст для аудирования), грамматическая таблица “ Reported Speech” , плакат с надписью “Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed” (Storm Jameson).

Цели и задачи:

Учебный аспект: повторение и закрепление активной лексики уроков5-го цикла; развитие навыков неподготовленной речи; формирование коммуникативной культуры обучающихся; развитие культуры устных выступлений при презентации проектных работ; повторение грамматической темы

Развивающий аспект: развитие коммуникативности, самостоятельности, развитие способностей к логическому изложению, к формулированию выводов.

Воспитательный аспект: формирование сознательного отношения к этическим нормам, формирование правовой культуры личности, воспитание уважительного отношения к мнению других людей.

T: Dear boys and girls! Today we are going to speak about happiness. You’ll share your opinions about what happiness is for you, listen to some advice of how to be happy. And I want to begin our lesson with the words of Thomas Jefferson “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”.

I Discussion.

T: Most countries have signed international conventions or treaties guaranteeing the protection of human rights. But what are human rights? Human rights usually refer to those rights that society has agreed are fundamental to people everywhere, such as the right to life, the right to live without oppression and the right to equal freedom of opportunity. Until World War II it was up to each country to decide what rights to grant its citizens but in 1948 the United Nations adopted the universal Declaration of Human Rights. Its 30 articles are the foundation upon which all later human rights instruments are built.

What rights do you think are written in the Declaration?

Can people be happy without these rights?

Do you meet happy people?

How do you guess that they are happy?

How is it expressed?

II. Listening.

Once upon a time there lived a peasant. He had a big family-an old mother, a wife, six children, a sick horse and a hen. But the peasant was poor, he had no money to feed his relatives and the cattle, to send his two daughters to school, to buy decent clothes for his beloved wife, who had only one old shabby dress, to repair the roof. One day an old woman knocked at his door and asked permission for the nights’ lodging. The peasant opened the door and let her in. “But listen, old woman, he said, “I’m poor and can’t give you much food and new clothes. Here is some bread and some milk for you. sorry, that’s all I can give you.” The woman thanked him and he saw tears in her eyes. In the morning the woman said to the peasant” You’ve saved my life, you’ll be rewarded for this. I’m not a beggar, as you might think, I’m Happiness and I can make any wish of yours, which will bring happiness in your house, come true. But if you don’t come back until the sun sets, none of your wishes will ever come true. You can discuss your wish with the family and tell me. Hurry up!” the poor peasant didn’t know what to do. he went back to his family and told them everything. A heated discussion started…everyone wanted something special- the sick mother asked for good health, the peasant’s wife wanted a beautiful dress and a diamond necklace, his elder daughters asked for rich husbands, his small children wanted a big cake and many toys. While they were arguing, they completely forgot about the dead line. When it was all over, a new day has already started. Certainly, Happiness had gone by that time.

III. Presentation of the project “Happiness for me is…"

T: You are right. The parable proves once again that different people have different ideas of happiness. Now close your eyes and imagine that you are touching happiness. What do you feel?

Possible answers: P1: It is warm…

P2: It is soft…

P3: It is fluffy…etc.

T: If you look up in a dictionary you’ll read that happiness is a feeling of pleasure, contentment, satisfaction, lack and good fortune. Now let’s see what happiness is for you.

(students comment on each project, give their arguments for or against, choose the most interesting and the most colourful one).

III. Reading.

T: The main condition for happiness is harmony in one’s soul. We can reach this if we learn to distinguish main and minor things. Let’s read a text about it.

Before you read:

Do you know what these words and phrases mean? Use a dictionary to check your work.

1. to be in a good(bad,merry) mood- быть в хорошем(дурном, веселом) расположении духа

2. an employee- рабочий, служащий

3. to make somebody curious- вызывать у кого-либо любопытство

4. a victim- жертва

5. to complain- жаловаться, выражать недовольство

6. all the junk (разговор.)- все ненужное

Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood(1) and always has something positive to say. When someone asked him how he was doing, he would reply,”If I were any better, I would be twins”. He was a natural motivator. If an employee(2) was having a bad day, Michael was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious(3), so one day I went up to Michael and ask him,”I don’t get it! You can’t be positive person all the time. How do you do it?” Michael replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself “Mike, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something happens, I can choose to be a victim(4) or I can choose to learn to get out from it. I choose the second. Every time someone complains(5) to me, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of the life.” “Yeach, right, it’s not that easy,” I protested. “Yes, it is,” Michael said. “Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk(6), every situation is a choice. You choose how to react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It’s your choice how to live your life.”

Discuss the following:

1. Give a character sketch of Michael. What is the author’s attitude to him.

2. Analyse Michael’s attitude to different situations. Say if you agree or disagree with such situations. Give examples to support your opinion.

3. How do you understand Michael’s statement “If I were any better, I would be twins!” Give your grounds.

4. “It’s your choice how you live life”. Comment on this line.

IV. Grammar review.

Write down the sentences into reported speech.

1. “One day I went up to Michael and asked him, “I don’t get it! You can’t be positive person all the time. How do you do it?”

2. Michael replied, ‘Each morning I wake up and say to myself “Mike, you have two choices today”

V. Summarising.

T: A man will be happy if everyone around him is happy. Can a man share his happiness? Of course. I’ll give you a wonderful recipe of happiness: “Take a bowl of patience, pour full heart of love into it, add two handful of generosity, sprinkle with kindness, splash a bit of humour and add faith as much as possible. Mix everything thoroughly. Spread on a slice of the life given to you and offer to everyone whom you meet on your way.”
