Well done. I know some of you have prepared information about Belarusian holidays. Would your share it with us?
P1 I am from Belarus. The first holiday of the year is New Year’s Day. There are a lot of New Year traditions in Belarus. In every home there is a New Year tree with lights and decorations. Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a present. Many people think New Year’s day to be a family holiday.
P 2 People in Belarus have many traditions. One of them is Maslenitsa. On this holiday people say good-bye to winter. People cook pancakes with honey or sour-cream, they sing songs and dance
P3 The 8th of March is a happy and nice holiday. Each family celebrates this spring holiday. In the morning, men go to the shops to buy some flowers. They try to clean flats and to cook a holiday dinner. Sons help their fathers too: they make a cake, lay the table and wash dishes after holiday dinner.
P4Easter is one of the most important Christian holidays. In our country the Sunday before Easter is called a Willow Sunday. On this day people bring home some willow branches which have been blessed in church. On Saturday children dye Easter eggs. In the evening people go to church for the Easter mass, which lasts all night. Sunday is the actual day of Easter. People visit each other on this day and exchange colourful eggs.
P5 : In Belarus we celebrate Victory day on the 9th of May. On this day, the radio and television broadcast parade held in the Victory square. High officials attend this parade.

Holidays and Customs
I. February 14th is Valentine’s Day. On this day people send cards, little presents or flowers to somebody they love. They do not write their names on the cards, so the person must guess who sent them. Sometimes the cards have funny rhymes (стихотворения).
II. April 1st is April Fool’s Day. People play tricks on their friends on this day. Even the news-papers and television have their April Fool’s joke. But in Britain you must not play tricks on people after 12 o’clock.
III. At Easter children in Britain get chocolate Easter eggs as presents from their parents and relatives. Sometimes cards are sent, but other presents are not usually given.
IV. October 31st is Halloween. But it is not a Christian festival. It goes back to Celtic |’keltik| times, when the end of summer and the beginning of winter was celebrated. Many strange things may happen on this day: witches and ghosts may fly through the air.
V. November 5th is Guy Fawkes Night. All over the country, people build bonfires and burn a figure |’fige| of Guy Fawkes. About a week before Bonfire Night, children make their guy from old clothes and newspapers. Then they carry their guy through the town and ask people for a “penny for the guy”. They collect the money for fireworks. Fireworks are an important part of Guy Fawkes Night.
VI. Christmas time starts early in Britain. In the weeks before Christmas, people send cards to everybody they know, and when they receive cards, they hang them on the walls. British people put up their Xmas tree many days before the real holiday, Christmas Day. Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, brings his presents late on Christmas Eve. Christmas dinner with turkey and plum pudding (рождественский пудинг со сливами) is the main meal of the holiday.
