Grade: 11 A Date: The theme of the lesson: Personal relationship The procedure of the lesson : I. Organization moment Good afternoon. How are you today? Let’s start our lesson. Today we’ll continue to talk about relationships between people. I’ll give you some definitions of family relationships. What’s the English word for each one? Your father’s son (but not you!) – brother Your mother’s brother – uncle Your father’s father – grandfather Your mother’s sister’s daughter – cousin Your brother’s son – nephew Your grandfather’s wife – grandmother.

  • I’ll give you definitions of some words referring to the topic of our lesson “Relationships” and you should write down the words or word combinations in your exercise-books.

    • a journalist who writes an article in a newspaper or magazine in which someone gives advice to readers about their personal problems (agony aunt)

  • I’m sure you all know that it is sometimes difficult to avoid arguments when you live together with someone. Now you are going to listen to part of a radio programme in which an agony aunt gives advice to callers. As you listen, decide whether these statements are true (T) or false (F).

  • Will you please look at the statements in exercise 2. Was the idea expressed by either Miranda or Jenny? Write Y for Yes and N for No.

  • Now I will play the recording again. Listen and check your answers, will you?

  • In order to solve problems successfully you should be able to explain yourselves, to understand your partner and to come to an agreement. That is communication. When talking to people you should take into account different levels of formality in spoken language.

  • When you take the FCE exam (First Certificate of English), you may be asked the following questions:

    • Have you got any brothers of sisters?

    • What do you parents do?

    • How many people are there in your family?

  • Read the answers that some students gave in an English exam interview and match them to the examiner’s questions. There are two different answers for each question. (Ex.1)

  • Tick ( ? ) the answers in exercise 1 you think are successful and put a cross (x) next to those that are not so successful. Keep in mind the level of formality.

  • In pairs ask and answer the following questions.

    • Have you got any brothers or sisters? Do you get on well with them/him/her?

    • Do you come from a large family?

    • What’s your best friend like?

    • What do your parents do?

    • How important is friendship to you? Why?

    • How would you describe your personality?

    • Are you closer to your friends or to your family?

    • What job do you want to do when you’re older?

    • Who would you go to if you had a personal problem?

  • Could you please tell us a few things that you’ve learnt about your partners?

  • To make sure you remember the vocabulary of the lesson well, let’s do the following crossword.

  • It brings us to the end of the lesson. What new information have you learnt today?

  • At home I want you to practise making suggestions to people who need your advice (see page 76 of the Student’s Book). We’ll discuss it next time.

  • I’d like to thank you for today’s lesson. You’ve worked very hard. Good bye!

KEY to Ex 1: a2, b3, c1, d2, e1, f1, g3

KEY to Ex 2: The most successful answers are “a, f, g”: they answer the questions fully (unlike “e”, where the answer is not sufficiently developed) and are neither too informal nor over-formal (like “c” and “d”, which sound very stilted in spoken English because of their use of the passive voice and words like “siblings”, which would normally only be used in a written context). Sentence “b” is quite inappropriate.
