INTRODUCTORY SPEECH.
Today we are going to share our ideas about Love by discussing people’s actions for the sake of Love and presenting three mini-projects, performing some songs, reviewing and enriching vocabulary on the theme. No doubt, this eternal theme implies the richness of the vocabulary because it inspired all the poets and writers, in a word, experts of high style vocabulary. What associations does the word “LOVE” acclaim inside us? Sitting in groups of 5 recall the words.
(They fill in one big sheet of paper and hang them out on the wall or blackboard).
Here on the screen you see a list of nicely displayed words some of which you are going to be problematic for translation. With the help of mono-or-bilingual dictionaries I suggest you finding the definitions of few of them: wedding gear, bridesmaid, best man, prenuptial agreement, pregnancy, honeymoon. (2 words each group).
Jack London’s “The End of the Story” consists of 2 parts and was under our consideration and you were to read it to the end at home. Will any of you give us a short retelling of it?
(Just like in all his novels there is a group of goldseekers waiting for the end of strong frost in a small hunters’ hut. But one day a newcomer all in snow appears in the doorway asking the doctor to help the seriously wounded man. On his arrival there the doctor, Linday Grant, is shocked to find out the woman near the wounded man to be his former wife. Seeing the heavy state of the wounded he refuses to cure him considering it to be useless. But she begs him to save her man. He gives his consent on the condition that in the case of the positive result she will return to him. She agrees. The wounded man recovers, makes exercises, goes skiing, and taking an advantage over one of his temporary absence, Linday Grant takes his bag into the boat and tells her to keep her word. She brings her small luggage. At that moment he presents her freedom, letting her stay with her beloved).
4) Answer the questions:
1) Did the end of the story coincide with youe expectations?
2) Why did he sacrifice his Love?
3) What is your opinion of that man?
There is no definition to this word. But it has been existing for centuries, it’s been eternal since the days of Adam and Eva. Love very often is a deep feeling, it’s a flame, a fire. Different people love differently, reasonably or passionately, sometimes even tragically. Two people sometimes have to overcome lots of obstacles. We have learnt a lot of love stories from legends, literature, and poetry: Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolda, Kyz Zhibek and Tulegen, Solveig.
I’m confident that our students mostly reading wampire stories and watching “Avatar”-like films should at least get aquainted with classics. I think these nicely staged films’ episodes will make their hearts beat fast.
Mini-presentation about Romeo and Juliet (in words first);
The story about Romeo and Juliet is a worldwidely known story of tragic love of two young people. Their Love was tender, sincere, but it was impossible, because, unfortunately, Romeo and Juliet belonged to families of Montague and Capulet which had been in hostile relations for a long time. They fell in love at first glance with each other, and nobody could prevent them from getting married. However, their love didn’t last long. During the usual quarrel when Romeo killed Juliet’s cousin the hostility between the families resumed, and Romeo was banished from Verona. Juliet was forced to marry Paris but she resisted and wanted to join her Romeo. She drank some poison of temporary action to imitate death. She was burried in the family vault. Romeo, in his turn, not knowing the true state of things but seeing his love dead drank some poison so that to be close to his beloved even in another world. When Juliet came to herself and found out that Romeo was dead, she stabbed a knife into her heart.
Videofragment from “ROMEO and JULIET”
Speaking on this eternal theme I can’t help remembering women who waited for their beloved men like Solveig, Madam Butterfly and Conchita.
Mini-presentationabout Rezanov and Conchita, the daughter of the Governor of San Francisco who had waited for Nikolai Rezanov for 35 years.
Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov was an outstanding Russian traveller, a statesman and one of the founders of the Russian-American trading company. He was born in a modest nobleman’s family in the Smolensk gubernia. He served as a lieutenant of the Izmailov Life Guards Regiment, later became Chief secretary of the Civil Department and then a manager in the main office of the Russian-American Company.
In 1806, he travelled to California on board the ships “Juno” and “Avos”, where he helped set uptrading relations between the Russian-American company and the Spanish colonists. On the way home he died near the city of Krasnoyarsk in Siberia. In the opera based on Andrei Voznesensky’s poem “Avos!” Conchita, becoming engaged to marry Count Nikolai Rezanov, waited for him for the next 35 years till she became 52 when she gave a vow of silence. She didn’t know that he had died. The story is really striking.
Videofragment from the opera “Juno” and “Avos” with N. Karachentsev performing « Я тебя никогда не забуду…»
Considering the fact that you all are fond of singing English songs I have translated this song into English and invite to sing it together under the accompaniment of the guitar: You will wake me up at the dawn,
Barefoot you will come off to see me.
You will never forget me Madonna,
And you never will see my “Yunona”.
Don’t wink, from the wind burst in tears
Those hopeless ripen black cherries.
To return is a bad superstition.
I’ll never press to heart my dear mistress.
And will peddle by senseless motion
A pair of phrases by chance flown in here.
I’ll never forget you believe me
I’ll not even see you or hear.
A little girl with large eyes and a laughing mouth whispers, “ Do you love me?” “Sure, my silly girlie!” I answer and think, “All our life we are seeking an answer to this question and never find it”. “Do you love me?” “Do you love me?!” “Do you still love meee....?” These questions are asked by 5-year- olds and 64-year-olds.
Presentation of the song “When I’m 64” performed by the group “Beetles”.
Animated version.
When I get older losing my hair
Many years from now,
Will you still be sending me a Valentine?
Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I’ve been out till quarter-to-three
Would you lock the door?
Will you still need me?
Will you still feed me
When i’m 64?
You’ll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you,
I could be handy mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by fire side,
Sunday morning go for a ride.
Doing the garden, digging a weed
Who could ask for more?
Will you still need me?
Will you still feed me
When I’m 64?
Now let’s come back to our contemporary life. Turning to present day state of love affairs. I suggest you guessing the final by just investigating these animated characters in the pictures. (2-3 predictions). (Pictures on the classboard)
Now listen to the episode. It ends unexpectedly to our mentality. [audio fragment from Headway upper-intermediate tapescript 9.6 (Nicole)]
For controlling the students’ listening comprehension let’s organize a kind of extempore (questions answered without previous preparations)
Did she burst into tears and get lost?
Why did she choose to go on with the party?
Was there anything to prove that she was frustrated?
Was he cruel or honest towards her?
Would you be able to overcome such a situation?
What would you do if you were Nicole?
Now in groups of 4-6 compile a poem arranging the cut out lines into a correct order.
Two groups are to compile the poem, meanwhile the other two groups are to translate thepoem.
Time has come at last to make conclusions. So, what is Love? Everyone is to write his own definition on a separate strip of paper with a heart.
While they are working the song “Love Theme” from the film “Godfather” is performed by Endi Williams.
All the strips are connected by staples or by scotch and are hung on the wall in the shape of a heart.
