Who is a successful person?

Level: grade 8

Language focus: lexics of the topic “Who is a successful person”

p.94. Workbook for the textbook “Enjoy English”, Unit 4, Lesson

1, exercise 2, page 52.

Approximate time: 45 minutes.

Materials: 1. A set of cards with tables and tasks.

PROCEDURE:

1.Lead in: (организационный момент, введение темы)

T.:"Good morning, students! Nice to meet you. Let's start our lesson. Today we shall speak about successful people and their features. Give me the names of successful people. (Students give some names)

T.: “Why do we call them successful?" (Students give their variants)

T.: “Do we meet successful people among us? Are your parents successful? What do you think about your teacher of Russian?" (Students answer)

2.Word focus: (обучение лексической стороне речи)

T.: “Why do people want to be successful?" (Students answer)

T.: “Who is a successful person? Read exercise 1, page 94, work in pairs and answer the question".

Sts.: “A person who works hard every day to become better and cleverer”

T.: “Read the quotation GLORY IS A PERMANENT EFFORT and paraphrase it"

Sts.: “SUCCESS IS AN EVERY DAY WORK”

T.:“Can everybody be successful? Why?”

Sts.: “No, it depends on traits of character.”

T.: “Name traits of character that can help people to become successful”

Sts.:"Independent, ambitious, brave, talented, hardworking, creative, curious, clever"

(The teacher writes these words on the blackboard.)

T.: “Take card 1 and match adjectives with proverbs” (Students work in groups and give their ideas)

T.: “What else is important for success? Take card 2, read the words and write them in order of their importance for success. The first one is the most important. Work in groups.” (Students read their variants)

3. Reading(обучение чтению)

Pre-reading:

T.:“Exercise 3, page 95. Work individually.” (Students read, translate and create sentences)

While-reading:

T.:"Read in groups ex.4 and find what the text is about (group 1), its subject matter (group 2) and the main idea of the text (group 3)" (Students share their ideas)

Post-reading:

T.:"Think of the best proverb to highlight the main idea of the text. Card 3.

(Students read, translate and choose the proverb in groups)

Sts.:“ Where there is a will, there is a way”

T.: “We have spoken today about successful people, the features of their character and things people need to become famous. Now let’s make up a cinquain about success. Work in groups. Look at the structure, it consists of 5 lines:

- a general word

- 2 adjectives on the topic

- 3 verbs

- the main idea of your poem

- a synonym, of the general word”

(Students read their poems)

4. Speaking (oбучение говорению)

Step 1 (подготовительный)

T.: “Take card 4, read the paragraph starters and translate them. Work in groups.” (Students read and translate)

Step 2 (построение логического высказывания)

T.:"Кead the texts in ex.11, p.96 and fill in the table" (Students read, fill in the table and present their work)

Step 3 (говорение)

T.:”Describe one of the famous people (page94) using the table”. (Students describe them)

5. Hometask: “Write down a biography of a famous person using card 4 as a plan and retell it”.
