Are you a spend thrift?
What do you do to afford expensive party dresses?
What are your ‘life’s true essentials’?
Do you try to economize on everything?

T: Pupils read the transcription of the following words:

P3: Josie has chosen to hide her poverty and make sacrifices in order to keep up appearances.

P1: Josie has always been poor. Maybe, low pay causes debts. But she is not a spendthrift. She never wastes money. At present she is on the dole, she receives money from the government because she is unemployed. Josie tries to economize on food to buy expensive clothes/ ‘true essentials’, and I don’t agree with her. It is silly to save money for expensive things in her position.
