Look it up!
Kate and Sarah love playing word games. They can do easy crosswords. They can find short words in long ones. For example, in the word ‘table’ they can find the words ‘bat’, ‘ate’, ‘eat’, ‘beat’, ‘bleat’, ‘tale’, and so on.
Their favourite game is Scrabble. In this game, they each have some letters. They must make words from the letters.
They always use a dictionary when they play. Then there are no arguments!
All the words in a dictionary are in alphabetic order. First there are all the words beginning with ‘a’, then all the words beginning with ‘b’, and so on. The other letters that make up the words also affect the order in which they appear in a dictionary. For example, ‘about’ comes before ‘across’ because, although both words begin with ‘a’, ‘b’ comes before ‘c’ in the alphabet.
