The root of all evil. A session of the “School Council” (Project).

Цели:

  • Улучшение произносительных навыков.

  • Активизация лексических и грамматических навыков.

  • Развитие навыков и умений говорения (развитие умений делать сообщения, содержащие наиболее важную информацию по теме; обосновывать свои намерения; рассуждать о фактах, приводя примеры, аргументы; делать выводы).

  • Обучение проектной технологии.

1-й этап. Подготовка, определение темы и целей по данной тематике (проведение заседания «Школьного совета»).

2-й этап. Планирование: определение источников информации, определение способа представления результатов. Распределение задач и обязанностей между участниками: председатель школьного совета, секретарь, учителя, директор школы, библиотекарь, родители, спонсоры.

3-й этап. Исследование проблемы (предварительная подготовка 3-минутного сообщения с аргументированной защитой своих идей, продумывание вопросов спонсором).

4-й этап. Достижение результатов (работа над фонетикой, лексикой и грамматикой используемого материала).

5-й этап. Представление результатов. Проведение заседания «школьного совета».

Ход проекта

I Introduction.

T: your school has been offered a donation of 100.000 roubles. You are about to take part in a meeting at which a decision will be taken on how this sum will be spent.

  • Bear in mind that your aim is to persuade the donors to invest as much as possible in your favourite project.

Think of arguments that will be convincing for each group of participants.

The people taking part in the meeting are:

  1. Chairperson. (He introduces the problem, gives the floor to the speakers manages the whole discussion).

  2. Secretary. (She keeps notes of the discussion, control the timing, reports on the decisions).

  3. Speaker 1 (teacher of Information Technology). (He is in favour of spending the money on buying personal computers for each student).

  4. Speaker 2 (teacher) (He insists on buying equipment for a small production of local crafts, which promises to be quite profitable and keep local traditions alive).

  5. Speaker 3 (social researcher) (He is strongly in favour of the idea of supporting the children from poor families with the money).

  6. Headmaster. (She is convinced that the biggest part of the money should be spent on school equipment and redecoration)/

  7. Librarian. (She thinks that the money should be spent on spiritual values).

  8. Parent. (He is sure that the money should be given to some really bright pupils).

  9. Donors. (They decide how the money will be spent after the discussion).

II Warming up.

T: this lesson is a fluency – oriented lesson. You will be given an opportunity to express yourselves freely. You will take part in a meeting of the School Council where you will represent different people. The aim of the whole lesson is to come to a decision which in this activity is more important than to speak correct English.

III Presentation (10-15 minutes)

Pupils take their role cards and give additional comments if necessary. They think of arguments to defend their projects. They look through their copy-books, make notes.

IV Activity. Project “The school council meeting” (presentation)

P1 Chairperson. Now I’d like to begin our school council meeting. Our school has been offered a donation of 100/000 roubles. The aim of our meeting is to come to a decision on how this sum will be spent. Our secretary will keep notes of the discussion and control the timing. Are you ready to begin taking notes of the discussion?

P2 Secretary. Yes, I’m. I’m ready to begin taking notes of your discussion.

P1: Chairperson. So, I’d like to give the floor to our teacher of Information Technology. You are welcome!

P3: (Speaker 1) (teacher of Information Technology). I think you understand the real importance of the electronic era. Nowadays many people prefer computers to printed books. Computers allow us to access the latest information really quickly. It’s much easier to edit and print documents using APC. So, of course I am in favour of spending the money on buying personal computers for each student.

Chairperson (P1): Thank you for your speech. Let’s listen to our teacher of Handicraft.

P4: Speaker 2 (teacher of Handicraft). We live in a wonderful country. Russia has a lot of traditions. And we must keep local traditions alive. I insist on buying equipment for a small school production of local crafts. This production promises to be quite profitable. And our pupils will know folk traditions of our country. It’s very important for them.

Chairperson (P1): Thank you for your expressive speech. Now I’d like to give the floor to our social researcher.

P5: Speaker 3 (social researcher). Parents living in poverty want to be recognized as human. I think we must support the children from poor families with the money. There should be priority in preschooling for the children of illiterate and badly housed parents. So I am strongly in favour of the idea of supporting the children from poor families with the money.

P2 Secretary: Sorry for interrupting you! But I haven’t written your last sentence. Will you repeat it?

Chairperson (P1): Thanks a lot for your speech! We will take into consideration all your arguments. Now I’d like to give the floor to our Headmaster.

P6: Headmaster. Do you like our school? Do you like our Assembly Hall, workshops, classrooms? Yes, they are comfortable and nice. But they are not well-equipped and they don’t have all the necessary things for studying. And many classrooms need redecorating. So I’m convinced that the biggest part of the money should be spent on school equipment and redecoration. Do you agree with me?

Chairperson (P1): Yes I agree with you. 50% of the money should be spent on school equipment. And now let’s listen to your librarian.

P7 Librarian: as for me, I am against materialism among young people. I think that the money should be spent on spiritual values (books, extra musical classes video films). Computers couldn’t replace printed books in the future. A printed page is better for human eyes than a computer screen. Besides, printed books don’t need electricity! They are cheaper and easier to use. So you should spend money on reference books, dictionaries.

P2 Secretary. So, but your time is up. Let’s listen to the next speaker. Now I’d like to give the floor to our parents.

P8 Parent: there are a lot of talented and creative pupils in our school. They attend a lot of courses. They are hardworking and clever. So I am sure that the money should be given to some really bright students as a scholarship.

Chairperson (P1): and now dear donors! You should decide how the money will be spent after the discussion.

P9 Donor 1: I think that 50 % of all this sum of money should be distributed on school equipment and redecoration. As it is the main aim of school to have good conditions for teaching pupils.

P10 Donor2: we consider that 20 % of the money should be spent on buying personal computers for senior pupils. The lessons of Information Technology are very important now.

P11 Donor 3: poverty is one of the main problems of modern world. And we must solve it. So 10 % of the money will support the children from poor families. Besides, we mustn’t forget our future, our hope, our best pupils. It’s our duty to help them. And 10 % of this sum of money will be given to them. Books are cheaper than computers. But our pupils can’t learn without them. So 5 5 of the money will be spent on textbooks and 5 % will be given for a small school production of local crafts.

As a result of the discussion sponsors decide how the money will be distributed and give reason for their choice.

V. Small group discuss why this decision was adopted.

VI. The conclusion of the lesson.
