St. Valentine’s Day is neither a national holiday nor especially religious. It’s celebrated on the 14 th of February. Still, it’s hard to imagine the American holiday calendar without this holiday. People send Valentine cards and presents to their husbands, wives, boyfriends and girlfriends. But you must never write your name on it.

Not all people know about the history of the holiday.

The celebration dates back to the ancient Roman festival called “Lupercalia” which took place on February 14 th or 15 th in honour of Juno , the Roman Goddess of women, and Pan , the god of nature. On that day there was a special ritual when young men randomly drew (тащили наугад ) love messages written and decorated by young women. So, “ matched by fate (выбранные судьбой) ,” the two would be partners at the festival.

• 1. A Christian priest (священник) Valentine was imprisoned and executed (казнен ) in the third century for spreading the teachings of Christ. On February 14, he was beheaded (обезглавлен) , but before he managed to heal (исцелять) the jailer’s blind daughter and write her a farewell (прощальное) letter, which he signed “From Your Valentine”.

• 2. The second Valentine was an Italian bishop (епископ) . He lived at about the same time. He was imprisoned for secretly marrying couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman emperor.

That’s why St. Valentine’s day is a religious holiday.

How is this holiday celebrated in Britain nowadays? School children decorate their classrooms with bright red paper hearts and celebrate the day in their schools. They also make valentine cards for their friends and parents and drop them into a Valentine box. It is usually a cardboard box decorated with white lace (кружево ) , red hearts and blue forget-me-nots (незабудки ). Valentine’s Day is a day to share loving feelings with friends and family. It has become traditional for many couples to become engaged on this day. This is a happy day because it is specially dedicated (просвещенный) to celebrated love, affection and friendship.
