MARK TWAIN(1835-1910)

Mark Twain (his real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens) was the founder of the realistic American novel of the present day. His work spans many genres - humour, satire, philosophical fiction, journalism and others - and in all of these genres he has consistently taken a humanist and democratic stance.

William Faulkner wrote that Mark Twain was " the first truly American writer, and we have all been his heirs ever since ," and Ernest Hemingway believed that all modern American literature came out of one book by Mark Twain, called The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Also, Maxim Gorky and Alexander Kuprin spoke particularly warmly of Mark Twain.

Mark Twain's major work is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). The novel relates to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: it has the same characters and the same time of action. But it reveals the author's mature stance, covers all aspects of the human experience richer and has a deeper generalising meaning. This book is one of the first in American literature to be written entirely in spoken English, using a variety of dialects and infused with local colour

Analysis

The story begins in the fictional town of St Petersberg. Huckleberry "Huck" Finn (the protagonist and narrator) and his friend Thomas "Tom" Sawyer received a decent sum of money as a result of previous adventures (described in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer).
The reader is immediately interested because the author writes in very simple and clear language, using many bright and resonant words.
The author describes the simple life of people living by the Mississippi and the entertaining adventures of little boys.
The author treats the main characters with great love and awe.

The author does not use a lot of metaphors and epithets because he writes everything in simple language, but he use a lot of catchphrases and dialect, for example:

«Good land, duke, lemme hug you!»
«…but that ain’t no matter»
« Is dey out o'sight yit?...»

My opinion

I really like Mark Twain's work and it was interesting to read the short sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. But it was a bit difficult to deal with the phonetic and grammatical features of the text.
