Olympic Games in Moscow 1980

The Games were held in Moscow, the capital of the USSR from July 19 to August 3, 1980. These were the first Olympic Games in Eastern Europe in history, as well as the first Olympic Games held in a Socialist country.
The Olympic Bear became the mascot of the Moscow Olympiad. The author of the Moscow emblem- the illustrator of children's books Viktor Chizhikov .
July 15, 1976 in Montreal the emblem was approved as the official symbol of the games of the 22th Olympiad in Moscow.
The opening ceremony of the 1980 Summer Olympics was held on July 19 in Moscow at the Luzhniki stadium.
The Olympic Games in Moscow began after the speech of Leonid Brezhnev
In total, athletes from 80 countries took part in the Moscow Olympics
5159 people from all over the world took part in the Moscow Olympics 4064 men 1115 women

A total of 521 medals were won. The USSR team took the palm in terms of the number of medals won, Soviet athletes won 80 gold, 69 silver and 46 bronze medals.
The ceremony was attended by Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR Leonid Brezhnev. Athletes from all countries marched in a single column along the track of the stadium. There were also raised flags of Greece, the cradle of the Olympics
At the end of the ceremony, to the song of Alexandra Pakhmutova to the verses of Nikolai Dobronravov, goodbye Moscow, performed by Lev Leshchenko and Tatyana Antsiferova, an Olympic bear floated into the middle of the stadium in balloons, which waved goodbye and flew away into the night sky
