– Well done! Now I’d like you to listen to the recording with some additional information about the Great Fire of London and say if the statements are true, false or you don’t know.

Listening.

The fire spread so quickly that people didn’t try to stop it at first. They tried to rescue the things from the houses.

There was no fire brigade in London in 1666 so Londoners themselves had to fight the fire. They used buckets of water and fire hooks. The best way to stop the fire was to pull down houses with hooks.

One more very important thing. In 1665 plague broke in England. It was called the Great Plague. It covered all the country. The Plague crawled from town to town, from village to village, killing people. People were in terror. They left their houses trying to run away from Black Death. It came into London. 75 thousand Londoners died from the plague. The Great Fire ruined the town, but it put the end to The Great Plague.

– Now, my dear friends, we’ll read the dialogue and train the pronunciation of words, word combinations and phrases. (The teacher is handing out sheets of paper with the dialogue. The pupils read the dialogue after the teacher, then they read it in roles.)

Dialogue.

Mary: Hi, Nick. I haven’t seen you for ages. How is your new school?

Nick: Oh, it’s great. The History lesson was very interesting today.

Mary: Really? What did you learn?

Nick: We studied the Great Fire of London. Now I know, it began in the house of king’s baker because of the strong wind and destroyed 80% of the city.

Mary: Oh, it’s awful!

Nick: The fire actually saved more people than it killed.

Mary: How could it happen?

Nick: The fire killed a lot of rats which transmitted the plague. That helped to stop the plague.

Mary: Oh, it’s really interesting. I didn’t know it.

Nick: Yes, I like my History lessons.

  • actually – на самом деле, в действительности

  • transmit – переносить, передавать

  • plague – чума

– And now, my dear friends, our task is to read the titles and then to read the paragraphs and to give each paragraph its title.

Match the title and the paragraph. Complete the table.

  1. Westminster Abbey

  2. Big Ben

  3. Great Fire

  4. Tower of London

  5. Londinium

  1. In the Romans times it was a small fortress over the river Thames. Some years later it became a trade centre where people could change and buy goods: clothes, shoes, furniture, food and many other things. There was only one bridge over the river. It looked very strange as there were houses and shops on it.

  2. It started on the 2nd of September in Pudding Lane, near London bridge. At night a servant woke up to find the house aflame. At that time most of the houses were made of wood and it didn’t take long for the fire to spread. People fought the fire by damaging the houses which were next to the inflamed one. But the time was lost and about 80% of the city was destroyed.

  3. It is one of the greatest symbols of Britain. It consists of several buildings but the main building is the White Tower. William the Conqueror built it to live in it as he was afraid of the English. It was a fortress, a palace, a prison, a king’s Zoo and now it is a museum.

  4. It was built after the Great Fire of London by the famous English architect. It took him 35 years to build it. It was built in the place of an old burnt church. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. In one of its towers there is one of the largest bells in the world.

  5. It is one of the oldest churches in London. It is more than one hundred years old. There are many monuments and statues there. All English kings and queens are crowned and many of them are buried here. Not only kings and queens but some of famous and important people of their century are buried there.

– My dear friends, we’re going to read a letter from an English girl Nancy to her Russian friend Anna. Nancy lives in London. Let’s have a look what she wrote in her letter. (The teacher is giving out copies of the letter.)

Dear Anna,
Thanks for your letter which I got three days ago. How are you? I hope everything is OK.
You asked me to describe you the place where I live. Well, I live in Victoria Street, not far from Victoria railway station. It’s a busy mainline station. You can find lots of shops along Victoria Street. The place where I live isn’t quiet but I like it as it’s in the very heart of London and not many people live here. You can go on foot from my house to St. Jame’s Park or to Westminster Abbey.
St. James Park is the oldest Royal park in London. There are three famous palaces around it: Westminster Palace (you know it as the Houses of Parliament), St. James Palace and Buckingham Palace. Westminster Abbey is more than nine hundred years old. The coronation of Kings and Queens has taken place here since 1066. Many Kings, Queens and great men and women from every century are buried here. They were famous politicians, lawyers, writers, artists, and musicians.
What famous English writers, artists and musicians do you know? What is the oldest building in London? Do you know anything about the Great Fire of London?
Well, I must finish my letter as my Mum asks me to help her with the shopping.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Love,
Nancy

– My dear friends, I’d like to see if you remember some facts from Nancy’s letter. Please, answer the following questions.

  1. What railway station is not far from Nancy’s house?

  2. What can you see along Victoria Street?

  3. How can you get from the place where Nancy lives to St. James Park and Westminster Abbey?

  4. How many palaces are there around St. James Park?

  5. What is Westminster Abbey famous for?

III. Домашнее задание.

At home you should:

  1. Learn the dialogue between Nick and Mary by heart;

  2. Write a letter to Nancy.

IV. Подведение итогов, выставление оценок.

– My dear friends, tell me, please what we have just spoken about? (We have spoken about London, its history and places of interest).

– What new facts have you learnt? (Now we know that the Great Fire of London helped people stop the plague. We can get from Victoria Station to St.James park or Westminster Abbey on foot. The Houses of Parliament are also called Westminster palace, etc.)

– So, I hope it was interesting for you to know more about such wonderful city as London. Thank you very much for your work! (slide 12) You have the following marks…

The lesson is over. See you at our next lesson!
