Celebrities

1. He was a superstar of silent comedies and one of the great icons of 20th-century film. Chaplin had a rotten childhood and an early start in the entertainment business, performing as a child on the vaudeville stage. He went to Hollywood in 1914 and began acting in silent comedies for Mack Sennett. His best-known films include The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931),

and Modern Times (1936, with Paulette Goddard, his wife at the time).

Famously outspoken and sympathetic to communism, Chaplin left the United States in 1952 because of McCarthy-era political pressure. He settled in Switzerland, where he and his wife Oona raised eight children, including actress Geraldine Chaplin. In 1972 he returned to the United States to accept a special Oscar, and in 1975 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

2.This person earned the nickname “Slowhand” while playing guitar for a succession of hot 1960s bands: The Yardbirds, John Mayhall and the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominoes. While with Derek and the Dominoes, he recorded the rock classic “Layla”. During the 1970s Clapton played as a guest with some of the greatest performers of the era, and had solo hits in “After Midnight” and a cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff”. In the 1980s and ‘90s, Clapton met with even more critical and popular success, and had a string of hits, including the top single “Tears in Heaven”, about the death of his young son.

3. This person was “discovered” in a London shopping mall at age 15 and become one of the A-list models of the 1990s. After making her first cover appearance on the British edition of Elle, she went on to pose for Vogue, Sports Illustrated, GQ and many other magazines. (According to her official biography, “Naomi was the first black model to appear on the covers of Time magazine, and French and British Vogue”.) Campbell is known as an aggressive and effective marketer of her own brand; among other ventures, she released her own perfume and cosmetics lines and co-wrote the 1997 novel Swan.

4.A self-made giant of Hollywood, he went from set-builder to art director (for 1981’s Escape From New York) to writer and then on to director of some of the biggest films of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He directed Arnold Schwarzenegger in his career-making role in The Terminator (1984) and its sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). His 1997 film Titanic broke box office records and won 11 Oscars, including awards for best picture and best director. After 12 years away from feature films, he made a spectacular return in 2009 with the effects-heavy f lm Avatar. The sci-fi epic was nominated for an Oscar as best film (eventually losing out to The Hurt Locker), and in only its second month of release surpassed Titanic as the highest-grossing movie of all time.

5The son of comparative literature professor August Coppola and dancer/choreographer Joy Vogelsang the person changed his name early in his career to make his own reputation, succeeding brilliantly with a host of classic, quirky roles by the late 1980s.

Initially studying theatre at Beverly Hills High (though he dropped out at 17), he secured a bit part in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) – most of which was cut, dashing his hopes and leading to a job selling popcorn at the Fairfax Theater, thinking that would be the only route to a movie career. But a job reading lines for uncle Francis’ Rumble Fish (1983) landed him a role in that film, followed by the punk-rocker in Valley Girl (1983), which was released first and truly launched his career.

6. A member of the exclusive club of world-famous magicians, he is known for staging whopper illusions, including making the Statue of Liberty disappear before a live audience and millions of TV viewers. A member of the Society of American Magicians since he was a teenager, Copperfield got his start in the entertainment industry singing and performing magic on stage in Chicago. When he was 19 years old he was tapped to host a television show, and from there his career took off. In addition to performing worldwide, he has had a hit on Broadway (1997’s Dreams and Nightmares), founded an organization to help rehabilitate disabled people (Project Magic), published books (Beyond Imagination and David Copperfield’s Tales of the Impossible) and dated a supermodel (Claudia Schiffer, 1994-99).
