DO YOU KNOW THE USA?
Aims: to sum up the pupils’ knowledge about the USA, to give additional information about this country, to develop and enrich pupils’ outlooks.
Facilities: pictures, cards with names and surnames, cards with the abbreviations.
PLAN
Warming up
T e a c h e r. Dear friends, today we are having a summary lesson, devoted to the USA. You have already read many texts in your books about this country, big cities, main holidays and sights. So today we are going to have a very interesting game – “Star Time”. Let me introduce the participants, there are 8 of them, they are brilliant pupils and I hope they will do their best to win the game. The game will have 5 rounds. I will explain the rules of each round later. The winner of the game will have one minute at the end of the competition to make a speech, so let’s start.
The first round
T e a c h e r. After the question has been asked you must raise one of your cards with the number.
The time to give an answer is 10 seconds after each question.
(8 surnames, printed on the sheet of paper are on the blackboard)

1. As you remember, America was discovered in the fifteenth century. Whose name did the country get? (Vespucci)
2. Niagara Falls is the best known natural wonder in the USA. What was the surname of the man who wanted to become famous by swimming Niagara River, but drowned? (Webb)
3. Who was only 9 years old when he saw a black slave beaten to death and promised to help poor slave? (Brown)
4. What is the surname of the woman who as many Americans believe, sewed the first American flsg? (Roos)
The second round
The rules are the same as in the first round. But after this round two participants who have the least numbers of points leave our competitions.

1. As far as you know the USA consists of 50 states. Please name the smallest and the largest states of the USA (the Rhode Island, Alaska).

3. Which state is famous for its beautiful beaches? It is also the homeplace of the Disney world (Florida).
4. Name the state of the country, which had sensational Niagara Falls? (New England)
5. This state is the birthplace of jazz. Name it, please. (Louisiana)
The third round
Now six participants are left in the competition. They are... You will get four tasks during this round then two more persons will go out.

4. It’s a land of big fiords and perpendicular ice-walls shining in the sky. (Glacier Bay)
Task 4
Now I’ll show you some picture and you should name me the famous sights of the USA you see in them.

The fourth round
So 4 participants are left. Now each of them will get a card with an abbreviation. The task is to say what it means

The fifth round
Now there are only two participants. And they will have the last competition.
Task 1
You will see the portraits of famous people of the USA. Please name them and tell what they are famous for.
George Washington – the first president of the USA, the father of the country.
Abraham Lincoln – the 16th American presidant who abolished slavery.
Jack London – famous American writer who was a sailor, a good miner, a shop-assistant.
John Brown – a national hero, fighter for slaves’ freedom.
Charlie Chaplin – a famous English/ American film actor.
Michael Jackson – a famous pop singer.
Neil Armstrong – an American astronaut.
Arnold Schwarzenegger – a famous Hollywood film star.
Task 2
Now you will have the word duel. Look at this long word – acknowledgment – признание.
You must make out of it as many words as possible: never mind what part of speech they are. I’ll give you 3 minutes for it. Then you must read the words in turn one after another.
The word must not be repeated. The last person to say the word is the winner.
Okay, according to the rule I give your 1 minute to say everything you want. Now you may speak.
Conclusion: So the winter’s speech was brilliant. Congratulations to you. You will get one more prize – a good mark in English. Thank you all so much.
