Plan of the lesson (Secondary School № 3 named after D. Kunaev)

Age: 12-13 Grade 6 «В» (14 students) DATE:23.02.18

Module 4 “The largest lake in the world” (Extra reading) 1 lesson

Goals:

1. Educational – student should explore knowledge about the grammar theme: comparative and superlative degree of comparison;

2. Developing - student should improve develop reading subskills when reading the text;

3. Cultural - student should have instant interest to study English, to have certain image of the given theme and understand the importance of others’ views.

Objectives:

- have a lexical warm up;

- revise transcriptions symbols (phonetic drill);

- learn/drill new vocabulary to the text and grammar exceptions (good/bad);

- do procedures aimed at the comprehension and comprehension assess (PP; definitions-giving procedure);

- read the text and answer the questions (special and detailed) (SB p.87).

Equipment: board (BB), chalk, supplementary materials – Power Point Presentation (PP), OHP, handouts with the questions.

Assumptions: Improbable, but some of the S-s may already know the exceptions of comparative and superlative forms of “good” and “bad”.

Anticipated problem: 1. S-s may have difficulty with some word in the text.

2. S-s may have difficulty in reading for gist / specific information.

Possible solution: 1. Pre-teach the Vocabulary.

2. Monitor while S-s perform.

Pre-Discussion of the Text (Predicting)

T offers S-s to look at the OHP picture on the wall (S-s are to suggest their variant in key words)

T suggests S-s to look at the BB (board) and drill some new words (matching definitions with the names)

The 5-th Stage

Gist Reading (Skimming) of the Text

T offers S-s to divide into 2 groups and read the text for the gist – 2 passages to each group (To build word associations in order to ice-break the text) ICQ – Teacher asks. In order to build up associations T shows and call the words (Appendix)

S-s are to get the main idea and build up association with the paragraph given to the group. After the T telling the words – S-s claim if is connected with their passage an take the word on group table.

Deducing the meaning from the key words

T offers S-s to draw the key words (each group on separate sheet), after that the group that received the key-word list is to fill in the gaps (Appendix)

S-s are to make notes, and pass the “key words” another group so that the opposites could get the idea of another two passages, and be able to make gaps filling activity
