Work inpairs and discuss the following questions:

  • What kinds of pollution do you know?

  • You know there’re different types of environment. What are they?

  • What can we do to protect the nature?

  • Must we help our planet?

  • What do you know about the environmental situation in our city/town?

  • What would you do to improve the situation if you were the leader of your country?

Watch a video - Save the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bn8R_XqjjI0

Task 1

  1. Students will get into small groups of 3-5 and create a short play. They must act out an environmental problem (e.g.. trash in the rivers, pollution), how it affects the environment/animals, and give practical ways to change this. Eg. recycle, use less plastic, organize river clean ups.

  2. The students will then act out their plays in front of the class.

Task 2

Students will invent an “environmental superhero”: on a piece of cardboard they will draw a picture of their superhero, and write what he/she specifically does to help the environment.

(These could be placed around the classroom as a reminder to the students what kind of people we need to save our world).

Exercise 1. First of all you must find Atyrau region and the Caspian Sea on the map.

And what can you say about ecological problems of the Caspian Sea and Atyrau region?

Advantages and Disadvantages. (Work in groups)

The 1st task is to answer the question: What kind of advantages and disadvantages do these companies have? You’ll work in 2 groups. The 1st group’s name is “Oil company”, and the 2nd group’s name is “Nature’s friend”. Make up a poster and present it. You have 2 minutes.

Oil company

Nature’s friend

E xercise 2. Make the Code of Ecological Rules for all people of our city/town. You’ll work in groups. Make some notes and compare your ideas with other students. You have 3 minutes to prepare a poster.

Are you ready? Please go to the blackboard and present your work.

Group I

Group II

Group III

Exercise 3. Listening. Now, I think it’s time to relax a little. Let’s sing a song “We are the world” with Michael Jackson..

Exercise 4. Game “Polyglot” (work with cards). Let’s play the game “Polyglot”. I’ll give you the cards with some definitions. You must guess the meanings in English and translate these words into Russian and Kazakh.

1. It is the earth with all people, animals and plants.

2. It means to make air, water, soil dirty or dangerously impure.

3. It means the action of pollute.

4. It means to kill, to ruin completely.

5. It is the ground that covers the earth in which the plants grow.

6. It means all the surroundings conditions; the natural conditions such as air, water, land, in which

man lives.

7. It means to protect the nature or keep safe from harm.

E xercise 5. Read the text and say your opinion on these ideas mentioned in it.

Air Pollution. Today the air is so polluted in some places that it’s not always safe to breathe there. Many cities around the world have air polluted with “smog”. Smog is brown air pollution that comes from cars and factories, it makes the air unsafe for people, animals and plants to breathe.

Water Pollution. The planet Earth is mostly water. But we’re not doing a very good job of keeping water clean. In many places, the water has become polluted. Rivers and lakes are polluted by garbage or by poisonous chemicals which are dumped right into them.

Land Pollution. When you throw something away, it goes in a garbage can. Almost all garbage is taken to a garbage dump, or landfill, where the garbage truck empties it onto the ground. So, most of our garbage is just buried. Now we are making so much garbage that in many places, there is not enough room to bury it all.

Letter

“Hello, Dear friends!

We are the students of the secondary school named after Zhambul. Our school is located in Zhanatalap village, Atyrau town.

Atyrau region is situated on the west of Kazakhstan. It’s the richest region of Kazakhstan because the land of Atyrau rich for oil. There’re a lot of factories and oil companies.

Different foreign oil companies and our national oil companies work in Atyrau region. Oil brings them a lot of profit, but wide using resources upsets the biological balance, pollutes air, water and soil.

Dear friends, we want to ask you do some posters for us:

About advantages and disadvantages of these oil company

The Code of Ecological Rules for all people of our town.

Thank you for your attention. We wish you good luck!”

What kinds of pollution do you know?

1. It is the earth with all people, animals and plants. (world – мир- әлем)

2. It means to make air, water, soil dirty or dangerously impure. (to pollute-загрязнять-ластау)

3. It means the action of pollute. (pollution-загрязнение-ластану)

4. It means to kill, to ruin completely. (to destroy – уничтожить-жою)

5. It is the ground that covers the earth in which the plants grow. (soil-почва-топырақ)

6. It means all the surroundings conditions; the natural conditions such as air, water, land, in which

man lives. (environment-окружающая среда-қоршаған орта)

7. It means to protect the nature or keep safe from harm. (to save-сохранять - сақтау)

  1. Discuss the environmental impact of pollution and other ways humans negatively impact the environment. What is pollution? What human activities create pollution? A good way to introduce this topic is to watch portions of Protecting Our Planet.

  2. After watchingProtecting Our Planet , ask students to describe times they, or others, littered or created pollution in some way. How do litter and pollution affect plants and animals? Talk about problems that may occur when garbage is not disposed of properly.

  3. Tell students that they are going to participate in a pollution activity. Take students outside or clear a large space in the classroom and have students stand in a large circle. Divide the circle in half with masking tape, a jump rope, or by some other means. Next, create five groups of students: Group One, humans; Group Two, plants; Group Three, fish, Group Four, plant-eating animals; Group Five, fish-eating animals.

  4. Give Group One handfuls of the pasta and tell them to scatter it in both halves of the circle. Tell students that this pasta represents exhaust, garbage, oil, pesticides, and other pollutants from human activities. Have Group One rejoin the circle and then ask Group Two to enter the circle, pick up pieces of pasta and then stand where they found the pasta. Tell the class that members of Group Two are plants that have been impacted by the pollution in their environment. Show the class that one side of the circle represents water while the other side of the circle represents land. Both land and water plants are affected by human pollution.

  5. Next, ask Groups Three and Four to enter the circle, Group Three on the water side and Group Four on the land side. Instruct these groups to "eat" a plant by linking arms with a "plant" on their side of the circle. Tell students that fish and plant-eating land animals are affected by pollution in many ways, including when they eat plants grown in polluted regions.

  6. Finally, have Group Five step into the circle and "eat" a fish or "plant-eating animal" by linking arms with either a "fish" or a "plant-eating" animal. Tell students to look around the circle. Who created the pollution? What happened after the land and water became polluted? Which group looks like it wasn't affected by the pollution? Is that really true?

  7. Have members of Group One step back into the circle and "eat" a plant, a fish, a plant-eating animal, or a fish-eating animal by linking arms with members of these groups.

  8. Return to the classroom and discuss what happened in the exercise. Who is affected by pollution? Talk about what kinds of things pollute our environment, reasons why it is important to protect our planet from pollution, and ways in which we can avoid polluting our world.

  9. Have students sit in the groups they were in for the pollution exercise and ask them to discuss pollution and ways we can reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. Then have each group design a poster including ways in which we can reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. Each poster should be creative, colorful, and present at least two facts about pollution and two ways in which we can reduce, recycle, or reuse waste. Students may use the following Web sites to assist them in creating their posters:

    • Think Green
