1. Осмыслениесодержания (Realization of meaning): the work on the new text (Reading with the dictionary) and filling in the table” INSERT”.
1.Scotland is the northernPart of Great Britain and it takes up one third of the British isles. It is important to mention that Scotland has not always been a part of the United Kingdom.
The Scottish people had their own royal family and fought the English for centuries.
In 1603,King James 6 of Scotland became King James 1 of England and Scotland. When he moved to London, Scottish independenceended.
2. Scotland consists of three main parts: the Highlands, which is the most northern and the most underpopulated area with a harsh climate.
The Lowlands, which is the industrial region, and the Southern Uplands, with hills, which border on England.
The territory of Scotland is about 79,000 square kilometres, but the population of Scotland is only five million people.
Scotland is a fascinating country. The hills are covered with purple heather. People believe that if a person manages to find the white one, he is lucky.
The lakes are beautiful. They are called lochs. The best known is Loch Ness where some people think a large monster lives. This mysterious monster Nessie sometimes appears to scare the tourists but only in fine weather, which is a great rarity for Scotland.
3. Numerous castles, stately homes, churches and abbeys allow the visitor to «touch the history» .
One of the peculiar and attractive features for tourists is a man in the kilt, playing the bagpipes. It is the national dress of the country. It is the relic of the time when the clan system existed in the Highlands.
Everybody in the clan had the same family name, like Mac-Donald or Mac -Gregor (Mac means «son of»). The clan had its own territory and sometimes there were fierce battles between clans. But nowadays the Mac -Donalds and Mac -Kenzies live in peace with each other.
4.Scotland is a land of many famous people: writers and poets, scientists and philosophers. For example, Alexander Graham Bell, born in Edinburgh, invented the phone.
Charles Mackintosh from Glasgow made a raincoat.
The adhesive stamps were invented by John Chalmers.
And the names of such writers as Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or Robert Burns are well-known to everybody.
5.Shipbuilding is one of the most important industries in Scotland.
Other industries are iron and steel, heavy and light engineering and coalmining. It is the centre of the working class movement and has glorious revolutionary traditions.
6.Scotland is a naturalist s paradise with all kinds of interesting wildlife from gliding otters and soaring golden eagles, to majestic red deer and the elusive wildcat.
