Tenses of the verb.

The procedure of the lesson:

T: Good morning, dear children! Sit down! Who is on duty today? What date is it today? Who is absent today? Who can tell me, what day is it today? Ok, you are right! What season is it now?

How do you do? I hope that you are fine!

Are you ready for this lesson? That’s great!

Look at the board! You can see a tongue-twister there. Listen to me attentively and say it as quickly as it is possible:

A big black bug bit a big black dog and the big black dog bit the big black bug nose.

Today we are going to review the tenses of the verb, which we learnt last year. What are they? Yes, that’s right. It is Present Indefinite, Present Continuous, Present Perfect, Past Indefinite, Past Continuous and Future Indefinite. First, let’s review the grammar rules.

And now I’m giving you a table with all tenses and we’ll do some exercises using this table (appendix).

Exercise 1. Look at the sentence and say what tense is used there.

T: Я часто смотрю телевизор. What English Tense should be used?

P: (глядя на таблицу): It is necessary to use the Present Simple Tense.

T: Give an English variant of this sentence, using the necessary form for a predicate in the table.

P: I often watch TV.

T: Я сейчас смотрю телевизор. What English Tense should be used?

P: (глядя на таблицу): It is necessary to use the Present Continuous Tense.

T: Give an English variant of this sentence, using the necessary form for a predicate in the table.

P: I am watching TV now.

Money for a Motorbike

It was the month of June and the weather was beautiful. Stuart left school. He was on holiday. But he was not happy. He did not have a motorbike.

Stuart was 17 years old. He left school, but he did not start work. All his mates started work immediately, but Stuart did not want to work. He wanted a long holiday and he needed a motorbike.

Stuart lived in Leeds – a big city in the North of England. Leeds is a busy city – full of offices, shops and factories. It’s not a good place for a holiday.

Martin, a friend of Stuart’s, worked in a garage. Martin had a bike for sale. It was a beauty – a Japanese Suzuki. Martin wanted $350 for the bike, but Stuart did not have $350. He didn’t have any money.

Stuart went and looked at the bike every day. It was beauty. He wanted to buy it.

“Where can I find $350?” Stuart asked himself.

Present Perfect Continuous Tense.

Оно обозначает действие предмета, которое началось в прошлом и длилось до момента речи. Не известно закончилось оно или нет.

Оно образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола have/has, been и смыслового глагола с окончанием ing.

В этом времени используются предлоги since, for.

Example: I have been reading a book for 2 hours.

About Animals.

Our planet is home to a vast collection of animals. They live everywhere.

Animals are all around us, so it is easy to think that we know exactly what animals are.

But some animals have fur or feathers, others have shells or scales, while many have no hard body parts at all. Animals often have eyes, ears and legs.

Firstly, animals’ bodies are made of lots of cells. These cells work together, like a team. Secondly, unlike plants, animals need to eat.

Such animals as a tiger, black rhino and giant panda, are now so rare that they are endangered.

Animals are in danger for many reasons, and most of these are to do with humans. People collect animals as pet, and hunt them for food and for ‘fun’. They destroy their habitats. We must look after food the animals we have left, before it is too late.

Whales are the biggest animals in the area. They are much bigger than any animals on land. The largest whales are more than 30 meters long.

The saquaro is the giant of the cactus family. Its height is often 50 feet (16 m).

Passive Voice

A Passive Verb is a form of be + a passive participle e.g. is bought, are cleaned, was born, were written.

We form negatives and questions in the same way as in active sentences.

Milk isn’t bought by me.

Where is the bread baked?

The room hasn’t been cleaned yet.

Was the book written by you?

Если в предложении идет речь о действии, но не указано, кто именно его совершил, значит, здесь, без сомнения, мы имеем дело с пассивным залогом, или Passive Voice. Что это за конструкция, как она образуется и в каких случаях употребляется – все это вы узнаете из данной статьи.

Начнем с примера Passive Voice в английском языке:
The walls are painted whiteСтены покрашены в белый цвет.
Как вы видите, результат известен, но кто выполнил покраску, из данного предложения мы узнать не можем (если только не мы приложили руку).

Чтобы построить предложение в Passive Voice, мы берем глагол be (быть) в нужной форме и добавляем третью форму глагола (или инфинитив плюс окончание -ed для правильных глаголов). А как узнать, какая форма глагола be нам нужна? Если вы считаете, что пассив бывает только настоящего времени, огорчим вас: это не так. Пассивные предложения встречаются и в других временах: Present Perfect, Past Simple, Past Perfect, да и не только в них. 
Но для начала научимся писать предложения в пассиве настоящего времени. Помогут вам в этом следующие примеры.

Sam always locks the door at 22:00Сэм всегда закрывает дверь в 10 часов вечера. (это пример «активного предложения»). А теперь переводим его в пассивное, и имя Сэма уже не будет фигурировать:
The door is always locked at 22:00В 10 часов вечера дверь всегда закрыта (пассив в Present Simple).

Случаи употребления пассивного залога:
1) Мы не знаем, кто выполнил действие.
Our house was burgled last yearВ прошлом году наш дом обокрали (и вор до сих пор не пойман). Это пример пассива во времени Past Simple.
2) Указание на то, кто совершил данное действие, не требуется – это является очевидным.
He was operated on this morningЕго прооперировали сегодня утром (врачи).
The thief will be found and arrested. Вор будет найден и арестован (полицией). Это пример пассива будущего времени.
3) Само действие является более важным, чем то, кто его совершил.
My car has been stolenМою машину угнали (пример пассива в Present Perfect).

Passive Voice в английском языке часто используется в тексте в тех случаях, когда в начале предложения мы говорим об информации уже известной, а далее добавляем новую информацию.

Например: We were staying in a nice hotel near the river. It had been advertised on the Internet. Мы остановились в симпатичной гостинице у реки. Она была разрекламирована в Интернете (в последнем предложении употреблен пассив в Past Perfect).

Активный залог (active voice)

Категория залога показывает, производит ли действие лицо (предмет), выраженное существительным или местоимением в функции подлежащего, или же оно само испытывает на себе чье-либо действие.

В английском языке существует два вида залога: активный залог (действительный) и пассивный залог(страдательный).

Активный залог (active voice) показывает, что лицо или предмет, выраженное подлежащим, само производит действие:

Sam baked a big cake.
Сэм испек большой пирог.

В примере выше лицо, выраженное подлежащим (Sam) самостоятельно производит действие (baked), т.е. является активным. Таким образом, можно сказать, что предложение в целом употреблено в активном залоге.

Другие примеры предложений в активном залоге:

Jeremy opened the present.
Джереми открыл подарок.
Susan found her car keys.
Сьюзен нашла свои ключи от машины.
James climbed the ladder.
Джеймс поднялся по лестнице.
Kate has knitted this sweater herself.
Кейт сама связала этот свитер.

Health farm.

1. “Thousands of teenagers are overweight,” says Health Farm managers Mr White, “Many teenagers often do not know how to eat well and stay healthy, like Karen”.

2. Karen was 13 years old. She weighed 80 kilos and was 1.55 cm tall. Karen usually had a large bowl of cereal for breakfast. At school she always had fried chicken and chips every lunch time. In the evening Karen usually had more fried food and she often ate a packet of biscuits or a box of chocolates in front of the television. Karen never ate any fruit and she rarely had fresh vegetables. Her main exercise was changing the TV channel or opening the fridge door.

3. Health Farm helped Karen with her diet and exercise plan. She now eats lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and goes swimming regularly. She never did any sport before because she was always so worried about her size. She now weighs 60 kilos and is still losing weight.

4. Mr White says, “Teenagers often come to the Farm depressed and with very little confidence. When they leave us they are usually happier and much more confident about themselves”.
