Время Past Continuous является одним из нескольких английских времен, которые описывают действие, совершенное в прошлом. Принадлежность его к группе Continuous говорит о том, что это действие являлось длительным, или длилось какое-то время.
Форма Past Continuous
Was/were + V-ing
Употребление Past Continuous
Past Continuous выражает прошедшее действие в процессе его совершение, т.е. незаконченное длительное действие.
Past Continuous употребляется: для выражения длительного действия, начавшегося до определенного момента в прошлом и всё еще совершавшегося в этот момент. Момент совершения действия может быть указан:
А) обозначениями времени, такими как at 5 o`clock, at 7 o`clock, atthatmoment и т.д.
Б) другим прошедшим временем, выраженным глаголом в Past Indefinite:
My friend was writing a letter when I came into the room.
