Main types of questions.

In English, there are 4 types of questions that you can ask:

• general question (Yes/No question)

• special question (Wh-question)

• alternative question (… or …)

• disjunctive question (tag-question)

1) The General Question задается ко всему предложению и требует ответа Yes или No. Порядок слов обратный, на первое место выносится вспомогательный глагол (do/does, be, have, will) или модальные глаголы.

The General Question is also known as “Yes/No questions” because a short answer (“yes” or “no”) is expected. This kind of question is formed by putting an auxiliary verb (do, be, have, will) or modal verb on the first place (inversion).

E.g. Do you like computers? – Yes, I do.

Is that your CD? – No, it is not. It’s Ann’s.

Does he speak Spanish? – Yes, he does.

Can you help us? – No, I can’t.

May I come in? – Yes, you may.

Didn’t she like the film? – Yes, she did.

Exercise 1. Put the general questions to the following sentences:

1. It is winter.

2. They went there by bus.

3. Tom has an interesting job.

4. Kate is interested in English.

2) The Special Question может относиться к любому члену предложения. Специальный вопрос всегда начинается со специального вопросительного слова: What? Which? When? Where? Why? Whose? Whom? What kind of? А также: How? How many? How much? How long?

The special question can be put to any part of the sentence. Special questions are also called Wh-questions as most of them we start with “Wh” (interrogative word). For example: What? Which? When? Where? Why? Whose? Whom? What kind of? Other special questions include: How? How many? How much? How long?

E.g. When did you come?

Where did you get it?

How are you going to do it?

What country did you come from?

• The Question to the Subject (вопрос к подлежащему) в любом времени не требует вспомогательного глагола. Порядок слов прямой.

• When the interrogative word “who” or “what” is the subject in the question (i.e., the question is put to the subject), the question is asked without an auxiliary verb, and the word order is that of a statement.

E.g. Who plays the piano in your family?

Who went to the picnic last Sunday?

Who hasn’t read this book yet? – I haven’t.

What made you do it? – I don't know.

What happened? – I lost my bag.

Who will tell him about it? – I will.

Exercise 2. Put the special questions to the following sentences using the given words and phrases:

1. I got up early this morning. (What time…?)

2. She lives in England. (Where…?)

3. It’s interesting work. (What kind of…?)

4. Sam is going to swim today (What…?)

5. She has a lot of books in her library. (Where…?)

3) The Alternative Question можно поставить к любому члену предложения, он предполагает выбор между двумя лицами, предметами, качествами и т.д.

The Alternative Question can be put to any member of a sentence. We put it in order to make a choice between two persons, objects, qualities, etc.

E.g. We watched a western on TV last night.

Did we or did they watch a western on TV last night?

Did you watch a western or a comedy last night?

Did you watch a western on TV last night or on Saturday?

Exercise 3. Put the alternative questions to the following sentences:

1. There are ten students in my group.

2. Mario wants to become a singer.

3. The children are going to watch the film.

4. She will get this information tomorrow.

4) The Disjunctive or Tag-question задается с целью выражения удивления, сомнения, подтверждения высказанной мысли и соответствует таким оборотам как «не правда ли?», «не так ли?» … Разделительный вопрос состоит из двух частей: повествовательной (с прямым порядком слов) и вопросительной, в которой употребляется вспомогательный или модальный глагол, входящий в состав сказуемого первой части.

E.g. You are an optimist, aren’t you?

He likes coffee, doesn’t he?

You can swim, can’t you?

Если первая часть вопроса утвердительная, то глагол во второй части будет иметь отрицательную форму. И наоборот, если первая часть вопроса отрицательная, то глагол во второй части имеет утвердительную форму.

Disjunctive questions are also called tag-questions. Tag questions are asked to get confirmation. A tag question (a disjunctive question) consists of two parts. The first part is a declarative sentence (a statement). The second part is a short general question (the tag). If the statement is affirmative, the tag is negative. If the statement is negative, the tag is affirmative.

E.g. English is difficult, isn’t it? He often lies, doesn’t he?

English isn’t difficult, is it? He never lies, does he?

Exercise 4. Choose the correct tag from the right column:

1. You usually start your work at nine o’clock, a. can she?

2. Tamara can’t speak any foreign language, b. do they?

3. He hasn’t got a pet, c. has he?

4. You can always trust me, d. don’t you?

5. They never argue with me, e. aren’t they?

6. Helen didn’t come to the party, f. did they?

7. We are going to see the ocean tomorrow, g. weren’t they?

8. He isn’t lazy, h. will she?

9. Pamela won’t go there, i. aren’t we?

10. They are lucky, j. can’t you?

11. Nobody called me, k. did she?

12. Everyone was very happy, l. is he?
