(Учитель предлагает всем учащимся ознакомиться с вопросами и последовательно отвечать на них, дополняя друг друга. В скобках приведены предполагаемые ответы.)

Teacher: The problem of our lesson is the global situation in ecology and what we can do with it. We’ll try to discuss some environmental problems.

Answer the questions, please!

  1. What is Ecology?

(Ecology is a science.)

  1. What does it study?

(It studies how plants, animals and other living things live in relation to each other and to their environment.)

  1. What is a natural environment?

(The natural environment is the air, the water, the soil and all the other things that surround a person, animal or plant.)

  1. What does ecology teach us?

(It teaches us how to survive in the modern world.)

  1. What information do ecologists collect about?

(They collect information about the population number, diet, form, size and behaviour.)

  1. Why do people so often speak about ecology nowadays?

(Our planet is in danger. We have a lot of ecological problems: air pollution, water pollution, littering, some plants become rare and vanish, some animals become extinct. Nature is something that not be constructed by man.)

  1. What do you think causes air pollution?

(Cars and factories, plants and power stations pollute the air and make it dangerous to breathe. For example, in Komsomolski we have a big factory “Mordovcement”. The air we breathe is polluted. It is dangerous to breathe.)

  1. What do you think causes water pollution?

(Companies dump toxic waste into our rivers, seas and oceans. They are filled with poison: industrial and nuclear waste.)

  1. And what can you say about littering?

(We dump domestic and industrial waste in the country. We leave litter in the forests, parks, streets.)

  1. Why do plants become rare and vanish? Why do animals become extinct?

(We take from the nature as much as we can. We cut down forests and build farms, houses, roads and factories on the land. Our useful insects: bees, dragonflies, butterflies can’t live in the atmosphere of chemicals. Radiation and transport are harmful to animals. There is pet and fur trade in the countries. Hunters kill animals. They kill them for meat, fur, tusks and horns. We pick wild flowers.)

  1. Can we live without plants and animals?

(We can’t live without plants and animals. They help to make the soil, they clean the water and air, and they give us all our food.)

Teacher: The world is our home and we must take care of it. What can we do to protect it?

People

We

Everybody

must(not)

feed birds in winter

save water and energy

litter

kill animals

recycle used materials: newspapers, glass bottles, cans

pick up litter

pick flowers

write on both sides of paper

walk or ride a bike whenever possible

repair leaking taps

make environmental programs

join the organizations that help nature

Teacher: By the way, do you know what recycling is.

Pupil: Recycling is when we make new products out of used products.

Discussion

P1, P2, P3 – P4, P5, P6

Group work

Teacher: I would like to unite you into two groups. Pupils in each group have to discuss and tell about any ecological problem. Pupils of the other group have to try to offer ways to solve these problems. Are you ready? Let’s begin.

Ecological problems

Solution

1. Nowadays people feel that it is more difficult to breathe: in big cities the air has become badly polluted. Most of the pollution comes from cars, buses and factories. Old people and little children feel bad and get ill because of the polluted air.

1. But the battle against air pollution is growing. Some countries make Clean Air laws. Scientists are looking for ways to make factories and cars run cleaner.

2. The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison: industrial and nuclear waste. The Mediterranean is already nearly dead, the North Sea is following. If nothing is done about it, they will one day nothing will be able to live in the seas.

2. Factories must pay big money if they are a polluter. We must make laws to control pollution. We mustn’t build factories on river banks. We must clean rivers and lakes. Factories must stop dumping their waste into the water.

3. When we burn coal and oil for energy, we cause pollution. Acid rain is another problem. Acid rain harms lakes, rivers and plants and the creatures that need them.

3. But little by little we are getting more energy from the sun and the wind. This energy is clean and renewable. Energy from the sun now helps heat and light homes in the USA. Many electric companies have discovered that saving energy is better than making more energy.

4. Farmers often spray chemicals on crops to protect them against pests. These chemicals are called pesticides. Scientists have found that pesticides often end up in our food. Pesticides can cause health problems – especially for kids.

4. But I have good news: the US government is helping farmers find ways to protect crops without using many pesticides.

5. We throw away a lot of trash daily. We dump domestic waste in the country. We leave litter in the forests, parks, streets.

5. Some companies have begun to use less packaging. A lot of countries have started recycling projects. In these ways we have begun making less trash. Everyone should look at what they throw away and try to throw away less. Governments should build recycling factories.

6. Every ten minutes, one kind of animal, plant or insect disappears. If nothing is done about it, over one million of species will disappear in twenty years from now.

6. There are people who are trying to do something about it. In 1961 the World Wildlife Fund was founded- a small group of people who wanted to raise money to save animals and plants. Today, the World Wildlife Fund is a large international organization. It has helped 30 mammals and birds to survive. Perhaps this is not much, but it is a start. Politicians can think of ways to stop hunting. Countries can open national parks.

7. Cars are the world’s biggest air polluters.

7. But scientists are trying to invent cars that pollute less.

Pause to change the activity

Teacher: guess what the bird it is.

1) A large beautiful white or sometimes black bird bigger than a duck, with a long neck that lives on rivers and lakes. (swan)

2) A small brown singing bird that lives in the field has its nest in the grass and usually sings early in the morning. (lark)

3) It is easy to teach these birds that live in South Africa, Australia and South America some words that people use. (parrot)

4) A bird with a long narrow beak which can make holes in trees. (woodpecker)

5) A night bird with large eyes that eats mice and other small animals. (owl)

6) A bird larger than a sparrow but smaller than a crow. It is usually grey or dark-blue and grey, sometimes white or brown. Often lives in cities. (pigeon)

7) A small bird that can sing better than any other. It usually sings at night, but it can sing in daytime too. (nightingale)

8) A large black and white bird that lives near the sea and has a loud voice. (seagull)

9) A bird which is black-and-white and which often takes to its nest small bright things. (magpie)

Teacher: listen to the poem “Oh, Russia, I’m in love with you!”

Remember, Russia, you are great

Not in the field of battles past

But in the green fields full of wheat

And forests, gardens, free of dust.

I love you deeply, dear land,

Your hills and rivers, sand on strand

Your songs and dances, lakes and seas

Your beasts and fish, birds in trees.

Your sunrise in a splendid sight

Which gives me always such delight!

Role play

Group work

Teacher: and now I offer you some role plays.

  1. I have invited a guest to our lesson. She is Mrs. Brown. She is a member of the environmental organization WWF. Ask her some questions about WWF.

(Примерный диалог для инсценирования)

Jane: Miss Chapman, may I ask you something?

Miss C h.: Yes, Jane, what is it?

Jane: What's that badge you are wearing?

Miss C h.: This panda badge? It shows that I am a member of WWF.

Jane: What's WWF? I've never heard of it.

Miss C h.: WWF means "Worldwide Fund for Nature". It's an international organization that protects wildlife on the planet. I believe WWF needs our support because it is very important to help wild animals to survive.

Jane: What do they do to help animals to survive?

Miss C h.: Different things. Mostly they help endangered animals. For example, if the population of some species is very small, it means they can become extinct. Ecologists protect them and try to make their population larger.

Jane: I see. That's very interesting. They are like Greenpeace. I'd like to work with Greenpeace. I think they are very active and brave. They stop those people who kill endangered animals and destroy their habitats.

Miss C h.: I know. All ecological organizations are useful. The more of them the better. Everyone should do what they can.

2. Teacher: imagine you are present at the conference of young ecologists. You are given a word. What will you speak about?

(Примерные ответы детей)

1) The environment is all the things we need to be able to live — clean water to drink and to wash with, air to breathe and healthy food to eat. We can't live without plants and animals. They help to make the soil, they clean the water and air, and they give us all our food. The world is our home and we want to see it clean and beautiful. At the same time we take from nature as much as we can. We cut down forests and build farms, houses, roads and factories on the land. While doing it we pollute the environment. We make a lot of waste some of which is toxic. We dump domestic and industrial waste in the country and pour toxic waste into our rivers, seas and oceans.

Cars and factories, plants and power stations pollute the air and make it dangerous to breathe.

People have to think about all these ecological problems if they want to survive.

2) People have been polluting the planet on which they live for many years. The result is very sad. We all live in a polluted world. Pollution started in a small way, but then it began growing and soon we all shall be in danger. The time has come to save our planet, to protect people, animals and plants from dying. First of all countries should have strong laws to control pollution, to protect animals and plants. Governments should be responsible for protecting nature. Today the law in some countries says: "The polluter must pay. If a person damages trees or animals, he must also pay." But unfortunately such good laws don't always work. Scientists often meet and talk about ways of helping nature, and politicians in many countries listen to them and are beginning to talk about this too.

Countries can open national parks. They are big and usually very beautiful places without buildings. These are homes for animals

Summary

Teacher: Today we have discussed a lot of ecological problems. I am sure that you are real friends of our planet. It’s very important to save it for all forms of life. All your answers were very good. I am pleased with your work. Thank you.
