What is the UK? The United Kingdom or UK is a political term which includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
What does the word ‘county’ mean? The word county describes an area with its own local government. County councils are elected to run things, such as education, housing, town planning, and rubbish disposal. They look after things like roads, libraries and swimming pools.
What is the role of the Queen in Britain?
In Britain the Queen is the Head of State, but in fact she doesn't rule the country .The most important function of the queen is ceremonial. The Queen is a symbol of the country, its history and its traditions. She is very rich. She travels about the United Kingdom, meets different people and visits schools, hospitals and other public places. The head of both Houses of Parliament is the Queen but she has very little power. It is the Queen who formally opens Parliament every autumn but the speech she makes from the throne is written for her by politicians. Nothing becomes British law without the monarch’s signature, but the Queen would never refuse to sign a bill which has been passed by parliament.
Who does the real power in Britain belong to? The real power in the country belongs to the British Parliament and to the British Government.
What does the British Parliament consist of? The British Parliament has two houses, or chambers: the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
What is the difference between the Commons and the Lords? The House of Commons consists of Members of Parliament, or MPs. The British people elect 650 members of the House of Commons every five years. The 1,203 members of the House of Lords are not elected. These members are permanent. They are often aristocrats, people of the church, lawyers and former politicians.
What do you know about the Union Jack? The British flag, known as the Union Jack, is a combination of three flags: the Saint Andrew’s cross, the Saint Patrick’s cross and the Saint George’s cross.
II.Работа с темой «Мои домашние обязанности».
1. What household duties do you have? (Предполагаемые ответы учащихся).
My daily chores are making my bed, washing up, tidying my room in the evening, cleaning my shoes and taking out the rubbish. This is my usual routine. I also pick up my little sister from the kindergarten. Fortunately I don’t have to cook any food because my mum and granny do that and they really enjoy cooking. I just sometimes help them and serve the table. Once or twice a week my mother asks me to go shopping to the nearest food supermarket. I usually buy some bread, milk, fruits and vegetables.
Once a week, on Sundays my parents give the flat a big cleaning. There is a lot of work to do: dusting the furniture, ironing the clothes, mopping the floor, clearing out the bathroom and the kitchen. I am busy with vacuum-cleaning the carpets in our bedrooms and cleaning the mirrors.
2.Работа с текстом «Мои домашние обязанности» Текст не сохранился в электронном виде.
This is my last year at school, and I work hard to pass my final examssuccessfully. As I am very busy, I can’t help my parents much in keeping the house.
But still I have some household duties. First of all I am responsible for my own room. I mustkeep it in order. Every day I do my room and my bed, dust the furniture in my room. Every day I also wash up dishes and take out the rubbish. It is also my duty to buy bread and milk. I usually go to the baker’s after I have dinner. I buy a loaf of brown and white bread, biscuits and cakes there. The shop is not far from our house and it doesn’t take me long to do everyday shopping.
I also help my mother to do all other work about the house. We wash our linen, iron, and mend it, clean the flat. We beat the dust out of the carpets, vacuum the floors and polish them. It’s not difficult to keep the flats tidy if you do the rooms regularly.Thia is my usual round of duties. But sometimes I have some other things to do.
When my mother is ill or away from home, I do the cooking together with my grandmother, do thewashing up, buying of food and the planning of meals are also my duties on these days.
I am not a good cook, but my vegetable soup is always tasty. I can also boil an egg or fry some meat. I also lay the table or clear away the dishes. If I am too busy or can’t do these things, all the duties are organized between other members of the family.
Sometimes I have to visit everyday services (пункты бытового обслуживания)-shoemaker’s, drycleaner’s.
My brother has also his duties at home. He helps his father to fix and repair some things. For instance, he repairs electrical appliances when they are out of order.
We are always glad to give a helping hand to our mother and grandmother about the house.

С возрастом
Some people say that childhood is the best time of your life. However, being a child has both advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages
On the plus side, you have very few responsibilities. For example, you don't have to go to work, pay bills, or do the shopping, cooking, or cleaning. This means you have plenty of free time to do whatever you want - watch TV; play on the computer; go out with friends; play sports, or pursue other hobbies. On top of that, public transport, cinema, and sports centres cost much less for children. All in all, being a child is an exciting, action-packed time in life.
Disadvantages
However, for every plus there is a minus. For one thing, you have to spend all day, Monday to Friday, at school. Studying usually means you have to do homework, and you have to take exams. What is more, you may have a lot of free time, but you are rarely allowed to do whatever you want. You usually have to ask your parents if you can do things, from going shopping in town to staying out late or going to a party. Last of all, although there are often cheaper prices for children, things are still expensive - and parents are not always generous with pocket money. There's never enough to do everything you want. The reality is that sometimes there's not enough to do anything at all!
Summary
To sum up, although some people see childhood as the best time in life, I think that children have no real choice, independence, or money. Nevertheless, it is true that choice, money, and independence all bring responsibilities and restrictions - which increase with age.
